Here's a picture of a fish my little boy caught about 6-8 weeks ago that I asked you guys about. Does anybody know whether this is a pike or muskie or grass pickerel or what? The black lines in it confused me.

From the pic, it appears to be a miniature 'ski; doesn't look like a pickeral judging by the lower jaw...I could be wrong...if I'm right, it will be the first time in...in...in...who knows?

***Second thought, it could be a pick...now I can't rest until positive ID has been made...

I agree, I'm real curious as to what it is. It was caught in a small lake at a local park that isn't supposed to have that type of fish in it, just blue gills and bass. But a ranger told me they have confirmed somebody put pike in it, though they had to jump a fence and do it at night otherwise I think doing it during the day would have been pretty brave with all the rangers around. Has me scratching my head, if somebody needs a closer look to see what it is that REALLY knows there fish I can send a larger pic thru email that shows the markings better.

I've never caught a northern pike, so really couldn't tell you. We have them in Va. somewhere supposedly, but I'm not exactly sure where. Someone knows something...perhaps the peeps who infiltrated the park will see this and step forward!

Where was it caught? Pickerel are not that common around here, could be a pike or a small musky. Congrats on the fish. Kids are great.

It was caught in north central Indiana in a little town called Osceola. Everybody said there's now Pike in there but would Pike go from black stripes to white dots?

I'm not sure because it's not all visible, but the tail looks forked and pointed. Wouldn't that make it a muskie?

Chain Pickerel photo here:
http://www.agfc.com/rules_regs/fishing_regs_fish_type_p3.html

Looks like the line through the eye is a typical marking.

Also, having seen small muskies while raiding a stocking pond, they don't have the adult body shape until they are a little larger, so I would suspect at this size a muskie would still be pretty cigar-shaped.

Cool little fish, they will be better on other specie populations than Northern Pike would be.

Take Crae,

Rockin SV- With the black line through the eye, it's probably a grass pickerel. They're suppose to be fairly common in Indiana. The IGFA world record is  1.0 lb caught in Dewart Lake, IN on June 9, 1990 by Mike Berg.

The photo's is a classic -proud moment. Maybe that young fisherman is holding a new WR? Better get yourself a real accurate 2 lb scale.
