Posts: 669 Location: mercer wi | Started having issues with numbness in the hand I hold my reel with couple years ago. Just wondering what some are doing as far as straps, braces and stretching to relieve numbness. I do have carpal tunnel so that's part of my issue.

Posts: 79 | Years ago I learned to use both right and left handed reels. Last year I finally blew my left wrist/thumb out. So this year I primarily use left handed reels or foregrip my rods that have right handed reels on them.

Posts: 255 | I had carpal tunnel surgery in November the numbness is gone but strength in hand is low . I would recommend wearing a brace at night when you sleep. I had the surgery in my left hand and have it in the right hand as well. I will not do the surgery again. Doing the brace and dealing with it. Good Luck

Posts: 8782 | Hi Dave I had a serious case of tendonitis/numbness some years back. I bought one of those braces that keeps your hand straight and laces up around your wrist. It turns out that I was sleeping with my hand all twisted up underneath me, and that's what (apparently) was causing the problem. It took about 3 days for the numbness to go away and a week for it to stop hurting completely wearing the brace only at night, after a few months of nearly constant pain and varying degrees of numbness in my thumb and hand. I wore it for maybe 2-3 weeks at night and have not had a problem since. Had a bit of a flare-up when I started musky fishing a lot, which was a simple fix of changing to holding the foregrip vs palming the reel. It took a day or so of casting to get used to that, but that was about it. Also, switching back and forth from right handed to left handed reels during the day has been a huge help for all the other elbow/shoullder stuff. Edited by esoxaddict 3/14/2016 5:50 PM

Posts: 1084 Location: Aurora | My ring & pinky fingers would lock up without warning at times about halfway thru the season. Switched a few round reels out to low profiles and the different grip seemed to solve the problem. I've been good for years now, as long as I remember to switch it up during the day/trip. Posts: 246 | I would get some numbness in my ring and pinky finger and I couldn't figure out what caused it. A chiropractor saw a little lump of muscle near my shoulder blade and pushed on it which relieved a lot of it. It was the ulnar nerve that was being pinched by the muscles near the shoulder blade. Now when it starts, I can push on the same spot to relieve the muscle spasm.

Posts: 558 | Try using a pistol grip on your rod. I have some called "outdoor grips" best thing i have purchased for musky fishing. This grip will take all of the pressure off of your wrist, elbow and fingers. Plus the grip works great for reeling in any lures with pull, bucktails especially. With this grip i can throw supermodels all day with next to zero fatigue. Plus you will get a great hook-set with it. Try one out you will like it alot.

Posts: 669 Location: mercer wi | Usually is worse when I'm throwing 10 blades. Jerkbait n small blades don't aggervate it. I've used outdoor grips. Great product. Still haven't had a full season using g them. They do give some relief. Do people wear braces or tape wrists when fishing. I wear sleep braces already. Hands have no issues except when fishing.

Posts: 1209 | I sleep with my hand and fingers straight, I stretch for 20-30 minutes prior to fishing, Chyrpractic care helps me. There are many forms of Chyrpractics finding one who can manipulate your arms and wrist through fingers in an aggressive way would be ideal. I learned that sleeping with your arm and hand strapped to a board will help that's why I found how to sleep with straight arm hand and fingers. And the stretching can be YouTubed. All seams to work for me but I am younger at this point but last season was much less pain free.

Posts: 719 | I've assembled hundreds of thousands of baits in my life and with throwing big baits on top of that I can attest that I've had all those issues. My number one friend is ice. Ice reduces inflammation. Use a flexible ice pack any time you lay down and you will be real surprised. A shower will get the blood pumping from the heat and then go right to the ice pack. Inflammation causes the majority of pain...

Posts: 1348 Location: Pewaukee, WI | For those suffering from carpel tunnel and numbness issues I can only tell you from experience to take care of it now and don't put it off. Do it while the effects are still reversible. If you don't it will only get worse.

Posts: 1220 | I'm not a doctor, don't play one on TV, but I'd say it's carpal tunnel for sure and the only cure is the surgical release of the band causing the loss of blood flow. How do I know? Just had the second surgery on my left hand in November after repairing my right hand two years earlier. First was 100% success. This one not quite, but over 90% cuz I waited too long. I'd say if you're up at night with the numbness, it's all fixable. If the numbness lasts into the next day, it might not be a 100% repair. Don't put it off.

Posts: 669 Location: mercer wi | Appreciate all the info. Made appt. To talk to orthopedic surgeon. See what happens. Would rather take care of it now. I'm only 33 don't want to have crippled hands by 40. Again appreciate it.

Posts: 410 Location: one foot over the line | Might be a blown disc in your neck. Happened to me, most of my fingers were going numb in my right hand and ended up having a fusion done between my 4th and 5th vertebrae at the age of 35. I hope this is not the case for you because it wasn't a lot of fun. Good luck.

Posts: 6 | I recommend you go to an orthopedic surgeon so they can do an EMG to determine the source of your numbness. I have had two disk fusions in my neck, ulnar elbow surgery, four shoulder surgeries and also a carpal tunnel surgery. Problems with anyone one of those areas can leaded to numbness in your hand. The longer you allow that numbness to continue, the more permanent the damage can become. You say you have carpal tunnel issues. Everyone does to some extent. Mine was deemed moderate for years but never dealt with while they fixed the other problems. Finally, the last EMG showed that the carpal had become severe and so they fixed that the last time I was under for my shoulder surgery. My fingers are still pretty weak and that surgery was a year ago. Again, find out the real source of your problem. Edited by bugler 3/15/2016 9:14 PM

Posts: 30 | Lift weights. Heavy weights with no gloves or straps improves grip strength. Still need rest and ice/heat, but improving grip strength makes a world of difference.
