Posts: 7 | I am going to be purchasing 2 new LT's. I have a Toro Winch and a NACL 60. I will be using them for just about everything in my box. I was thinking of getting the Big Nasty for blades/Topwater and a Big Dawg for Cranks/Rubber/Jerkbaits. Any suggestions you all may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Posts: 132 | I have a Long Ranger and a Sligblade. They do about 90% of what I want them to do. Not great for big rubber but I don't throw them enough and have other rods that do that well.

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | Do you ever throw smaller stuff? I could be pretty set with a slingblade and a big nasty.

Posts: 7 | I do throw smaller stuff in the spring but but I mainly throw buck tails, suicks, and top water. Crankbaits range from 6" jakes to 10" and depth and shallow raiders. I do have a 7'6" MH PREMIER but I will be getting a third rod and reel next winter. I was also thinking nasty and sling made but I don't have anything to throw big rubber and truly large baits.

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | I know you didn't mention it but if you want to look into a big rubber rod, you've got a couple good options that are fairly cheap. A Tackle Industries XXH or an Okuma EVX XXH. Since you've already got your Premier MH, I would buy a Big Nasty. Then when it gets late summer get yourself a XXH. Those rods mentioned will be $130-$150. That Big Nasty will end up being your bread and butter 60% stick. Then you've got your MH for small stuff and your big bait rod when you feel like chucking bricks.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | What's "big rubber" to you? I throw pounders fairly often on my Big Nastys and they work just fine, I prefer my Big Dawgs though because they're lighter. IMO you might be better served with a BN and a Sling Blade.

Posts: 7 | I was leaning toward the Big Dawg for jerkbaits. More than one person here and other places have suggested the Sling Blade and everyone has put a word for Big Nasty. So now comes the question what reel on what rod and what lure presentations do I use each rod and reel for? Say I get the Big Nasty and Sling Blade. Can you all give your opinion on what reel to pair them with and what lures to run with them. Sad thing is here I would test but the dang lures keep bouncing off the water..........Water temp is low below 32 degrees low.

Posts: 92 | Big nasty for anything but jerk baits. If i could have just one rod that is the one i would keep. Great for rubber up to pounders and great bucktail rod. I always tell people that have reservations about spending the money on one to huck rubber for a day with it. Your back and shoulders will tell you to buy it.

Posts: 92 | Missed your last question. My preference is a tranx when i am throwing blades/Topwater on the big nasty in the summer and when i am primarily throwing rubber late in the fall a high speed lexa or similar reel for line pickup on same rod that i can easily get a grip on with gloves. Lots of good reels out there but my main concern is the line pickup in the fall and keeping a high speed reel on that rod that is really easy to palm with forty layers on lol.

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | As far as reels go you will get a lot of answers. Being a Garcia fan I am inclined to suggests pairing a slingblade with a Revo Toro S 5.3 (I have this combo) and the Big Nasty with a Revo Toro Beast!!! Big pimpin..

Posts: 667 Location: Wisconsin | Big fan of the Slingblade. I have a Shimano 301D on mine. It is the rod I always seem to always grab. BUT, I don't throw much rubber. I think a big part of the reel choice is how it fits your hand. I had a number low profile reels, Abu NaCl, Curado and I sold them all as they just were not comfortable for me. Tranx was just way too big. The D series Shimano is so very comfortable for a full day of fishing, again, to me. Try them out and see which you like the feel of.

I assume he means which of the reels he already owns should be paired with which prospective rod. I'd put your NaCl on a big nasty... You would use this for just about everything. Then your winch on a... whatever other rod you decide to get.

Posts: 7 | Hogg thank you for clarifying that. I keep going back and forth from the Big Dawg to the Slingblade. I think I am going with the Big Dawg and convert my winch to a 5.4 and that should set me up for a while!

Hogg has it right. ^^ And you have it right with changing the gears on the winch would make it more versitile for sure. As for the Big Dawg, it is a great rod as well. So are you going Big Dawg and the Nasty?

Posts: 7 | No need to be sorry. Yes I am thinking about getting the Big Nasty and Big Dawg. I think it will cover most things and I have a 7'6" mh premier for lighter stuff I just need to upgrade the reel.

Posts: 25 Location: Ham Lake, Minnesota | I wanted two St. Croix Legend Tournaments for all the baits I throw. I started off running the LT Top N Tail and an LT Slingblade. I quickly realized how well-rounded the Slingblade was, pretty much doing everything the Top N Tail will do and more. I then decided I needed a rod for big baits and I added the Big Nasty. I still have my Top N Tail, but I don't use it very often. I pretty much use my full cork Slingblade with the rear handle extended to 19" and my full cork Big Nasty with rear handle extended to 20" for everything.

Posts: 1283 | I got a Slingblade, Big Dawg and 2 Big Nastys. I rarely use the slingblade or the Dawg anymore. I use the 2 Nastys with a low speed reel on one and a HS on the other. Does everything great unless you throw big rubber all the time.
