I am currently using a xxxh 10'6 TI rod for my rubber. I have heard that some people have coustom built surf rods for this and I was looking to add one. What would you guys recomend.. I am looking for around a 12 foot rod in xxx or a little heavier.
Thanks

Thorne Bros. Predator XH or XXH if you're just using it for big rubber. I have a 9' XH that I couldn't be happier with.

Do you guys feel the need to go longer on your rubber rods... I went from a 9 ft to the 10'6 and really like the ability to cast further and more easily with it..

find andy (flambeuski), i used his 12' surf rod at Vermillion a couple years ago and it was a great experience. some friends have since had customs made. if you do a search, you may find the thread with the rod-builder contact information in it.

I was having this conversation recently, and think that longer would make more sense. The problem with throwing pounders is that you need a really stiff rod to throw them, but that means that the tip is often too stiff for the rod to load up properly, requiring a lot more shoulder and wrist action to cast. A longer rod would allow more flexibility in the tip, making casting pounders all day a bit easier. The best rod I've used so far is the custom x pounder rod, but it is only 8'10''. I think a 9 and half foot rod or longer might be better.

I like my Thorn Bros predator X heavy 9 foot 8 inch rod. When I replace this rod "won't be for awhile " I'll go longer would like to try a surf rod.

I just got an email from rod geeks that they now have a 13' xh surf blank for builders to buy... It's a two piece, but has some interesting specs. Rated for 8-20 ounce lures and 30-80 pound line, xh mf. It would probably have a lot of flex being a moderate fast action, but the xh power would likely be pretty great for big rubber.

Our "Pounder" XXH rods come in all lengths. The XXXH dedicated "Pounder +" rods come in 9' telescopic. Two come with black blanks with split or full grips and one in full camo with black x-shrink split grips.

On special right now for $50 off at $125 too:

So I assume by getting into a 12 to 13 ft rod they're all going to be two piece I that a drawback for most people?

I'm looking at getting a Thorne Bros Rod. I want a rod for throwing Mag dawgs-Pounders, Husky Dussas, Big gliders Phantom 10 inchers and 10 inch Hellhounds. What size should I go with the 9 ft Xh or XXh?

ToothTamer rods are worth a look. 8'6" or 9" XH for Mags/Dussa's and the like - very versitile. XXX for pounders. We use ToothTamers all year long - From KY in the spring thru sucker time in November...Quality Rods and Priced right; they work great for us!

XH all day... They are both great rods but the XH loads and launches better on all those baits. The XXH is awesome for Monster Dusas, 2 Pounders, Ripping 12-14 inch Cranks and is actually great with Super Models provided you are not casting into the wind but for most rubber applications the XH is a better rod (IMHO)

YES. I have a 9'8" XH and I absolutely love it. I would recommend cork over syncork though. Syncork is rough and takes a lot of getting used to

Also consider getting some heat shrink tubing for your handles. If it gets dirty, just cut it off and reshrink more on....

Good stuff and durable.

So the 1 piece 9 ft XH Predator...? It's only rated from 3-8 does that matter for throwing them baits?

Those rod ratings do not accurately describe what that rod can do. It's very well-suited for throwing big rubber and it handles the smaller stuff well too.

Surf type rods can break when used for boat fishing if a fish takes a dive under the boat.

How do you land a fish with a 10-12 ft rod? Can anyone post a video of casting a pounder with a 10ft+ rod?

I fish with my dad a 1/4 of the time and it's not to bad but it becomes a little more of a challenge when you are alone... have not lost a fish because of it but knock on wood!!
