Just wondering if anyone uses a spinning rod for musky. If so what rods are you using and how are you fishing with them, bucktails jerkbaits.

I have used an Ugly Stik Big Water Rod for the last 3 years. No issues whatsoever & very affordable. It is a 7 foot one piece rated for up to 3oz baits and another rated for 6oz baits. Use them for jigging, throwing bucktails, crankbaits, and jerkbaits.
Paired with an Okuma Trio reel (20 lbs drag) and an old Abu Cardinal reel. Neither set up has failed me yet.

I have a Shimano Sustain 5000 series and have been looking for several years for a spinning rod to match-up with it. The choices are so limited, I can hardly believe it. I would like something in the 8' to 8'6" range with fast action, with maybe a 1-4 oz rating. Probably looking at a custom build. I saw what R&H had to offer, I wasn't really interested. Any ideas?

I have a custom that I had Franks Customs make a couple years back. Its built on a St Croix LTS Flipping stick blank that we kicked out to 8 Ft. I have a Split Grip on it and Titanium Guides. Its an awesome rod. I use it primarily for fishing swim baits with weighted swim bait hooks or jig heads for musky and I also use it for Tarpon fishing. For Musky I prefer a 3000 Sized Sustain for Tarpon a 5000. A good 3000 Sized reel can handle the job and weight allot less. St Croix Mojo Inshore Rods or the Loomis Green Inshore Rods are a solid off the shelf option.

I use a SC 7 ft. Hvy spinning rod with a stradic 3500 spinning reel. I use it in the spring with jig/plastics and small jerkbaits like 4.5" phantoms. It has worked great ... a lot fun.

Started using spinning rods and reels with Dave Snoddy back in the 60's. Trouble free night fishing, surface baits, cranks ect. Extra length of rod was a great advantage, especially at night. Try it you will like the results and spinning gives tired casting muscles a rest.

St Croix has their Tidemaster series. There are two good ones in there for muskies. It's in their saltwater section.

On a related note, their Tidemaster Travel Rod is fricken awesome.

I second the St. Croix Tidemaster. I own the 8fter and absolutely love it! I can throw most lures and on average spin reels pick up more line. I use the shimanio Symetre 4000 which picks up 36" of line per turn. I throw 10" gliders on my spin since it picks up the slack line better on those wide glides. Love it for burning #8's and pitching tubes and lighter soft plastics. The rods/ reels(more so the reels) can't handle double 10's and mag dawgs and pounder dawgs. Landed 50"ers without a problem on the rod and reel. The Tidemaster (heavy action I own) is a little expensive but will make up the cost in reels since most are cheaper than bait caster reels.

I see this is an older thread but I'll still chime in. I don't use spinning gear often but I have found that in certain situations like early season and for users without bait caster experience it can be effective and a lot of fun. For the rod I have a Shimano Teramar Southeast Inshore Spinning Rod, 8', Extra-Heavy. I use it with 30 - 50lbs braided and have thrown bucktail, jerkbait, crankbait and topwater lures up to 3oz. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't come in a stiff enough action to really work twitch and glide baits as well as I would like. As for the reel I have a Shimano Stradic 4000 FH that I picked up in gently used condition on Ebay. I have found that with a lot of the Shimano reels that are more affordable when you go from 4000 to 5000 models you may get better stats but the reel weight increases significantly as well. I prefer to keep the rod balanced and light as possible. The rod and reel together before leaders, line and upgrades was about $250. Much cheaper than an average bait casting set up. As I said I don't use this set up often since I really only trust my casting gear to the big baits and the big girls, however, I do believe in the diversification of tactics to get more muskies in the bag all year. There seems to be a lot of macho negativity towards the use of spinning tackle but I just ignore it and fish. Spinning tackle can really help make accurate casts in smaller rivers and tributaries when hunting those post spawn river muskies. Also, it's worth noting that if you don't have a good heavy drag system it may allow a bigger fish to run longer which can be damaging to there health. Hope that helps someone out there.

Toothtamer has a few good muskie spinning rods. You can also always have one made on a blank of your choice. Tuscarora Tackle has our Tackle Industries blanks and also a full line of St Croix blanks.

I have a couple, and recommend Toothtamer. Spinning rods have their place and work great, especially (in my experience) for younger anglers or new anglers in the boat, not yet used to using baitcasters. However, I use it for lighter lures, smaller lures, and fliping mid sized tubes and oversized senkos. ToothTamer makes nice rods for sure!

I just ordered a st croix avid inshore 8ft 3/4 to 3oz. The tracking says it will be on the porch when I get home from work, I will let you know more about it after I test drive it. I am pairing it with one of the abu 3000 size reals and finishing it off with 50 pound power pro maxquatro. I got it for my son who is 8 but am also going to try to use it for small spring stuff.

Garry,

I think you're going to be very happy with that blank! Last year my son took to rebuilding a Cabela's bait casting rod, the Tourney Trail IM8, 15-30# test, 3/4-2 1/2 oz. lure weight med. hvy power, XF action and I liked it a lot!

I'm thinking on something like this for tossing small 7" Suicks for fun but I'm having trouble with not tossing regular-sized Suicks on my typical casting sticks --- choices!

All this talk about spinning rods. It's been on my mind...So...

Stopped in at Gander Mtn. Nah...

Went over to Thorne Bros. before going to Cabela's to look over one mentioned in a previous post here. Never made it!!

Came home with a Thorne Bros. Custom "S series" 7ft HVY. Loved it as soon as I picked her up. Blew the budget with a Shimano Stradic 4000XG spinning reel loaded up with 125 yds. of 40# Power-Pro. Was going to stay with 30# but was suggested I go a tad heavier.

Danged but that reel is smooooooth!!

My wife came along b/c she figured we were going to make it to Cabela's. She says "How many rods do you need?" Me...."Aww, hey....THINK OF THEM AS SHOES!!!"

Can't wait to pull the boat up to Vermilion!

Chaos tackle has a few muskie spinning rods. Just saw a real nice Custom X spinning rod in his booth.
