I went musky fishing for the first time a few days ago and was lucky enough to one to bite. I was using a crankbait and I didn't really notice I had it on until it surfaced, then about 10 feet from the bank it shook the hook.It was a pretty decent fish the guy I was with said 40 or better but the problem was I didn't get a good hookset. I want to go ahead and replace all the hooks on my plugs and softbaits, whats the sharpest/best hooks you all trust?

Unless yer hooks are in poor condition, i'd start with sharpening the ones that're on the baits.
Do a search here or poke around online to learn how to properly sharpen hooks.

I agree with the previous post. Start off by purchasing a hook file and use it! File the four side of the points of the hook. I'm talking jump out of the tackle box stick you sharp! The point of a sharp hook will peel your thumbnail when you gently drag the hook point across your thumbnail.

Also, what is the power of the rod that you are fishing with? Is it a musky rod or a conventional casting rod that might be used by a bass fisherman? The power of most any musky fishing rod is greater than that of a corresponding bass casting rod. This level of power in a rod is needed to deliver the mail to the musky.

Finally, how about your hookset? I missed the hookset on my first few muskies. My mentor explained it this way: tie your line to a clothes line post and give it your best hookset. If the pole doesn't bend, keep practicing! I set the hook on muskies with my arms, shoulders and legs. In other words, I use all of my body to set the hooks into a musky.

Good fishing and tight lines!!

If you don't want to do the above just go buy some Gamakatsu's. "Stickiest" hooks ever.

I use a hook file and get my hooks quite sharp. I file 3 sides. left, right and outside. I guess you could call it 4-sided?

BTW Gamakatsu makes excellent hooks.

I twitch - Jerkbait a lot and they usually hit on the pause sometimes just holding the bait in there mouth. I actually watch my line for movement. If I see - feel anything No questions asked I set the hook. It may be a weed or ? but I lose less fish this way.
