So I was watching some videos on you tube and noticed several guys that cast with 3'-4' of line between tip n leader. Mostly with big rubber. Now I've always left the standard 6" or so. So what's up with the long lead. What do you guys use n why.

6 to 14 inches ( 2 inches plus the leader) and if you cast sidearm you won't be back in my boat you may have to swim home.

It is easier to cast heavy baits (i.e. big rubber) with a longer lead. It's also easier with a longer rod. It's physics bro, try it out. Often times my dussa and dog tails are touching water on my backcast.

Its not a cast, its called a lob. A cast is when you use the torque of the rod to load up to use the power of the rod to "snap" forward to zip that bait out there. A lob does not need to do that because the the big rubber doesn't need that to "snap" the rod for any distance.

Thank you for clarification, but I thought a cat was a house pet or large carnivores animal.

Someone else is fishing with cats? Do you use a glove or a vice when you hook them up?

I use a pendulum motion on my big rubber with 3' or so of line out. much less taxing over the course of a long day throwing pounders/monster dussas. Also occasionally will quick-strike a stray cat in the fall if I find one around the ramp. big fish, big bait.

It's physics, think sling trebuchet vs standard catapult. Instead of a short casting stroke with a short lead (catapult), the longer section of line allows the rod to load fully and more evenly and uses that longer lead as a sling (trebuchet). Your hand pulling down on the rod butt is the counterweight, "slinging" the lure. When you use this method particularly with heavier lures, the rod does the work for you. With any lure over 6oz you'll cast better with fewer backlashes, less fatigue and in the case of any lure that tumbles in the air you'll nearly eliminate the tangling that can occur.

So is a med fast action better then a fast action for this style of casting/lobbing.

Rod action doesn't make a difference as long as the rod is appropriate for the lure being thrown.
