Looking to get my first custom rod built.. leaning towards big nasty blank with an extended handle, high quality components, and colors to match the new abu beast. Have a couple builders in mind, will also be attending the Wausau show. Any input from you fellow anglers? Thanks in advance!

And besides the blank, handle length, and aethsetics, any other features or components I should be inquiring about?

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | There are some great rod builders out there the "best" there is no best they all make great rods. Find a builder in your area and talk to them ask questions if you like what they say order one if not find some one else. After saying that I would give Lonnie at Thorn Bros top notch guy. This is what I look for 1 what am I going to use it for what baits 2 length my last 2 rod's were 9 foot 8 inch 3 length of Handel and for grip split or standard grip 4 guides what kind color three standard or spiral rap 5 rod blank most rod builders can get whatever blank you want I recommend predator

Posts: 298 | Thorne Bros built my custom predators. Only thing I would change about the whole deal is I wish I had torzite guides on all of them.... Any good custom builder is worth your money. Just make sure you know what you want as it is up to YOU to order the right rod. Handle length is one of the big things. Wrap colors can really make it your own as well. Ask lots of questions during the ordering process.

Posts: 265 Location: Manitowish Waters WI | Just picked my 9'6 telescoping from Nick at Jawbreaker. It's fricken sweet. Met him at the expo to pick it up. He took me from start to finish setting up the rod on a TI xh blank. Communication was great. He was sending me pictures all the way as he worked on it. Hell of a guy and awesome product. Very reasonable priced for a custom rod.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Rodbuilders should warrant what they build. Find out what the warranty is on their rods and how much time and $ it will take to replace if it fails. Find out how long it takes to build start to finish. You don't want to order in May and not get it till October. Find out the components used or choose your own. I've seen many a blank ruined by oversized or undersized components, or fancy looking components that are useless on the water.

Posts: 109 Location: Pewaukee, WI | I really like Thorne Bros. custom rods. They do great work. A few years back they did a Big Nasty blank for me with a 18" Flared handle and extended the rod out to 9'8". Awesome rod!! I have most of my rods done with there regular flare (1-1/2" Dia.) on the butt. Last summer they did a -3" Heavy Predator with the large flare (2" Dia.)and I really like that handle. I just talked to Lonnie yesterday to order a XXL Predator and if you want a rod done by spring you will need to order it soon. He said that there pretty backed up right now.
