Posts: 239 Location: Madison, WI | My first Tranx is on its way. How much braid do you guys load em up with? I've heard of people putting on 70 bucks worth of braid but that doesn't make sense to me. any input is appreciated

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I don't have a Tranx but I'd put 75 yards (1/2 of a 150 yard spool) on it. Fill the rest up with the cheapest mono backing you can find. No need to have more than that. We don't cast nearly that far and if a musky runs it would usually be measured in feet rather than yards.

Posts: 1100 | i use between 75-100 yards depending on how much there is on the spool (of line)

Posts: 632 Location: S.W. WI | I usually put a 150 yrd spool on, with a lot of mono backing underneath. I fish a lot, and use my Tranx a lot, so I end up cutting large chunks off as it wears from abuse as the season progresses so I need about that much to make it thru the whole season.

Posts: 141 Location: Minnetonka | Is it a PG or an HG? Like the others said, make sure you give it enough mono backing so that 75 yards of braid or so will finish the spool off. These things hold a lot of line, and if you want to be able to retrieve the max inches per turn, you need the spool filled up. I feel like this might be more important on the PG, since the HG already brings in a ridiculous amount per crank.

Posts: 239 Location: Madison, WI | I am getting the HG. Heres how i usually fill reels 1. put 100 yards of braid on empty reel A 2. Fill reel A with Mono til Brimming. 3. strip mono off of reel A onto Reel B. 4. strip braid off of reel A onto reel C. 5. Put Mono from reel B back onto reel A for backing 6. Put Braid from Reel C back onto reel A so that it is full. done. I think this is the most accurate way to do it but it sure isn't efficient (good thing there's plenty of winter left). Any better methods for guys who do it themselves? (Besides taking it to a bait shop... already know that is the easy way) Rude Dog, when you've cut the worn braid off a few times do you strip the braid to add more backing in order to keep the reel full?

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I've done it that way but it takes a bunch of reels and two of them need to be the same reel for it to work out correctly in the end (and the 3rd needs to hold as much line as the others or more). What I do is put as much braid on the spool as I want and then fill with mono backing till the reel is as full as I want. Then I either: 1.) Tie the line to a tree or stake and walk the line off the spool. I usually put a couple driveway markers in my yard about 50 yards apart and walk/wrap the line around them since I don't have a couple hundred yards of distance. I've done this at a park early in the morning too... One the spool is empty, tie the backing to the spool and reel it back up. OR 2.) Tie the backing to my boat cleat, put the boat in gear, and let all the line out. Once the line is off the spool, tie the backing to the reel, and reel it back up. If you do this, make sure it's a quiet lake and you're the only one out or you could get your line wrapped in somebody else's prop. Also make sure you get the one end tied off to the cleat well enough so you don't lose the whole thing in the lake! I've gone to typically doing method number 1.

Its not rocket science. Just put on as much braid as you feel you need.Top off with mono and then....and this is the key..........fish backwards.

Posts: 866 Location: NE Ohio | ^^^^^^^^^^^ i get goofy looks from the family when i start the doing the line thing in the yard also. LOL. i have the room and put on 100yds. of braid. one thing i always do though after i really fill the spool up is tie off the end of the braid to the door knob on my building walk back out the 100yds of braid and then wind it back on under allot of tension. this makes it lay really nice on the spool and never digs into itself under any normal uasage.

Posts: 163 | Put your desired amount of braid on reel then top off with backing. Take an empty line spool and stick it on a drill bit that fits the hole in the spool (electrical tape can be helpful). Then wind line off of reel with an electric drill. Then take another empty spool and wind it off of first spool with the drill again. Then its ready to go on the reel.

Posts: 537 Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | Buy line in bulk, put on a bunch of backing then fill the reel to the top. In bulk is cheaper, faster, and more efficient.

Posts: 149 | I use mono that has the same diameter as braid - usually 20lb mono for 80lb braid. Tranx holds 210 yards of 80 lb so I use 135 yards of mono and 75 yards of braid. I put the mono on using a clip on line counter and then fill with braid.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | Make sure you fill up the Tranx with as much as possible. Smaller amount of line means a smaller spool, which can impact the speed/pickup in a negative way.

Location: Contrarian Island | wow, you guys must cast reallllly far! ![]() Brian, I actually disagree with filling the HG to the max... yes, you won't get the max inches per crank but I fill mine to about 7/8 full as it will actually bring in a touch less but that is easier to reel so imo I can bring it in faster than with a full spool...

Posts: 663 | OR you could take it to a fishing tackle store that has a bulk line winder and let them do it for you. Depending on what kind of backing it will come out cheaper anyhow. I usually put on somewhere around 120 yard of 20 lb. mono and then if you're using 80lb. braid you will easily get 100 + yards of braid on the reel.

Posts: 1749 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | 150 yards. The more times you cut line, the more you waste. Average cast of 70'? A person can pitch a bass lure 40'. I have measured casts over land and 120' is easy, 150-160 can be done when really casting hard. When you fish around cover and your line gets chewed, strip off and retie. When you cast to the knot, you risk losing a fish, and an expensive lure. Don't cheap out on the line. 300-500 on a reel, 200-600 on a rod and you can't invest 20 in line for a reel for years of fishing? After a year, cut off what is worn and add it below the unused section of line. None is wasted this way.
