Posts: 1828 | Kirby Budrow - 1/29/2016 2:48 PM How would that thing ever fit through a 5 inch hole anyway? 5" hole has a 19.6" circumference. Probably about the same as the fish's girth. Definitely a tight fit! Hard to believe, but the current MDWR (58x28) muskie would fit through a 6" hole, girth-wise. It does seem like a 49 incher's face should be wider than 5" though.

Posts: 89 | That's Iowa, we are way behind on catch and release. Lot of our fish hit 40 or 41 and go home conked by a bass or walleye angler. Had a guy at work that thought I was full of crap when I told him he should stop eating a muskie he had frozen because of mercury. He was feeding it to his Jr high age daughters. He ate a whole 44, still don't think he beleaved me when I showed him the mercury warning because it was from the Wisconsin DNR (not the iowa dnr). In iowa the bigger the fish the less to clean. Maybe someday the catch and release revolution will reach us. If you scroll down there is another muskie and a big northern all kept. And that just one paper. I'm all for eating fish, it's great don't get me wrong, but a 18 inch walleye is my choice over a 28 incher, and bluegills taste better anyway :p

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | Despite his apparent thrill and heart-pounding after landing the fish, methinks he really did wanna return her if the circumstances would've been right. He was right to keep her as it was...given the circumstance. Beat me up but I kinda feel for the fellow!

You would need a 10" auger to pull a WR fish through. 10" Hole 8" Hole 6" Hole 5" Hole 31.41592654 25.13274123 18.84955592 15.70796327 How big of an auger would you need to pull ToddM through? I have a 10" auger we could try but his head might not fit? Does anyone have a big enough gaff? Nice fish - so he pickled it, it was his fish. He can always get a replica made. I just wouldn't eat to much of that fish at one time or give any to my pregnant wife. Here's a very good pickled pike recipe! It works with other fish too. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=505562186170693&set=a.467448... Have fun! Al

Posts: 20221 Location: oswego, il | 18.8" is the circumference. Al you could try it and if you would please, been gaffed before if you could stick it in my gaff hole I would appreciate it. You cannot blame the guy for wanting to land the fish of a lifetime. Not being a musky fisherman he probably does not think like us. I am sure he did not bring a calculator or a slide rule, or look at musky girth data for this lake or calculate probabilities based on his location and presentation. This brings me to some questions. What is the best algorithm for ice fisherman who may catch a musky? Is there a program? It appears we may need a laptop with us on the ice running this program. I see no way around it. Would a laptop be enough? Maybe we need a server. Edited by ToddM 1/30/2016 10:17 AM

Your everyday run of the mill smartphone would suffice, plus it can do double duty and be used to take the vertical hold photos that everybody loves to see. I like the idea of a slide rule, though it is sure to confound the youngsters. Perhaps it should become a required element of the release tool kit. I'm hoping that math is easier for musky fisherman to master than basic English is !

Seeing this oversight now has led me to check my end-of-day work from Friday. It would be very bad if I was making similar, rushed mistakes at work as I made in that post.

ToddM, A slide rule works fine without a power source as does an abacus, then you can keep track of how big the hole should have been and how many you didn't catch...oops who hit "clear all" on my abacus.....? Of course you have to know how to use them, much like Slamr's "delete" and "move to basement" buttons! Yeah, pickled toxin's, yummy! Have fun! Al Edited by ESOX Maniac 2/2/2016 9:49 AM
