Posts: 151 Location: Chippewa Falls, WI | Just wondering what some thoughts are on these two reels. I own primarily NACL's but did just buy a new HG to go on my 9'6 chaos tackle Hulbert edition to cast big rubber (pretty much exclusively). I know some guys love the HG because of the speed for burning big blades but I know from personal experience that I didn't enjoy the HG for big blades. I'm planning on throwing a beast 4.9 or a PG on a rod dedicated for big blades. My favorite all around rod for cranks, smaller blades, surface ect is a sling blade with a HS nacl on it. I want a rod specifically for big blades and Im trying to decide between these two reels. The line pick up for the tranx is 30" and the Beast is 27". I can buy a beast on ebay for $320 and a PG for $360 so cost isn't the deciding factor in any way. Just wondering for ease of pulling big blades if the PG is worth the extra size and weight? Please don't refer me to do a search about best reel for 10's or big blades, I've read them all. This is a specific question about two reels for one specific purpose. Thanks, Adubs

Posts: 991 | I haven't used a beast 4.9 yet but I have used the PG and you can hardly feel the blades resistance when reeling them in.

Posts: 528 | I would go tranx, but that's only because I've had one for a few years now and it's still going strong. I use it to throw blades of all sizes. The huge amount of line a pg tranx holds allows you to pick up line rapidly without putting a ton of stress on your body. No way I would use anything else for big blades.

Posts: 230 Location: St Paul, Minnesota | Tranx - $499.99 Retail, 4.6:1 gear ratio @ 30 inches per crank. Beast - $399.99 Retail, 4.9:1 gear ratio @ 27 inches per crank. (High speed model does 34 inches per crank) I see it like this, the Beast is a neat reel, it feels very well made and has noticeable improvements and updated engineering over its NaCl predecessor, but it is not a Tranx-beater. In my opinion the Tranx is the way to go, you get the heavy cranking 4.6:1 gear ratio, but with the speed near that of the high speed Beast reel due to a larger diameter spool. That all being said, the Tranx is a larger and heavier reel, this doesn't bother me at all, but if you do have smaller hands and palm your reels or are sensitive to the weight of the reel, it is something to consider. -C7

Posts: 151 Location: Chippewa Falls, WI | appreciate the good feedback so far, just to be clear for anyone else that may read this thread. the Beast is a 4.9:1 gear ration not 4.6:1. Tranx has lower gear ratio and still pulls in more line per turn in exchange for the added size and weight. That's my dilemma in choosing between the two...

The Tranx is the way to go for me, but there is a price to pay in $$ size and weight. I have both reels and both are the Best Musky reels you can buy today.

Posts: 1000 | You can always spool a tranx down to 27 IPT, you can't spool a 4.9 beast to 30IPT. With that said, I've noticed slowing down has located the bigger fish in the system so i intend to pick up the 4.9 to compliment my PG.

Posts: 309 Location: Elgin IL | I bought a Tranx when they came out and didn't care for the size and weight. I just ordered a beast and plan on putting the 5.3.1 toro gears for pulling 10s

Posts: 1000 | if shimano would put out a 400 series tranx it would end this once and for all. one thing that's not noted is the new drag on the beast is actually pretty revolutionary. Lever drag benefits in a star drag package. It doesn't get the attention it should, especially considering how many fish are hooked boat side.

Posts: 27 | It seems like the direct comparison would be the Revo Toro S 60 at 29 inches per turn. I have a Tranx and like it. Bought a Toro S this winter to use for double tens, and a lighter smaller reel. Reviews seem to be very good for this reel, and the price point/features is very good. Personally have loved all of the toros that I have.

Posts: 778 | Shimano 400 size Tranx-OR-Toro Beast 70. That would end it once and for all! Or, would it just create more confusion?? ![]()
