Hello. I have a 14 year old muskie head. His old Ambassador reel fell apart last year, so I picked him up a Abu Revo Toro 51 NaCL 5.4:1 and he got my 7 foot St Croix Premier. He wants to work towards a second muskie rod and reel combo.

What would be a good reel and rod to complement with what I picked up last year? He's about 5' 9" and growing. He's starting to throw heavier lures, so I was thinking a Lexa 400 or a Winch - but would love your input and gear ratio advice (I'm a walleye guy). THANK YOU!

First, if the old Ambassaduer is a Swedish made version, Imo, I would get it fixed. Chinese version, deep six! As far as something new for bigger baits, a Toro 60s, paired up with a 8' or 8' 06" heavy action St. Croix premier and your son is good to go! KDAWG

NACL 60 in high speed. Many large heavy lures have less resistance for retrieving and a high speed reel is "easier" for all day and he has the more torque reel for 10's

I'm 15 myself and throw bigger rubber 90% of the time. I'm not sure what you mean by bigger stuff but if he was getting into monster medusas and magnum bulldawgs like I throw I would recomend a xxxh rod I am using a 10'6 xxh TI and a custom 12'6 ft xxxh. Both are paired with a tranx hg.if he was throwing more bigger bucktails and wanted a more all purpose rod for bigger baits I would go with a st croix big dawg or big nasty. You can also look at the mojo musky line of rods.I belive they have a 8'6 xh that might do the trick at a fraction of the cost. If have never looked into the premier line of rods so I couldn't tell you if they had one that would fit the needs you mentioned. I'm not an abu guy so I would recomend a curado or calcutta d but it's not sure exactly what he is planning on throwing with it. Hope I helped a little bit. Good luck!
