I've managed to bend the handle on my 400 TE twice both during hookset. Once on a small fish and once on a 40 incher. The first time it was the handle shaft and now the second time it's where the rivet attaches the handle. I haven't ever had this problem with my Abu Morrums.

Am I just a hook setting moster or has anybody else experienced this?

Well, it shouldn't be bending. I've never bent mine, but I don't have any great pressure on my crankin' hand. It's usually the hand with the rod. But it still shouldn't bend. Maybe once you bent it for the first time you damaged it. I dropped a Calcutta once on the pavement and bent it, never been right since. But that was just a 150 bass reel, not quite as substantial.

Maybe you have to stop doing twelve ounce curls?

Good fishin',

Never have seen this happen? I have been using the 400 for years, got a couple of the TE's when they came out, and have also picked up a couple of the TE Conquest reels. I have never even come close to bending a handle.

When I set the hook, I am not "heavy on the handle", I will usually palm the reel during a hook set, so I have a better grip on the rod as a whole. I would suggest a new handle, once you weaken the metal it will bend easier, and it might actually break, which would only happen on hte fish of your life!

I think they have gone to new "forged" handles from the older "stamped" variety.

Good Luck!
Steve

I was just looking, and couldn't find any info on whether or not it was a forged handle. It would be a bit disappointing if they weren't, especially for that kind of money and their intended use.

Give Shimano a call . They are real good about that kind of thing.

Thanks Guys,
I'll check with Shimano. I palm the reel as well on hookset, but I must also set with the right hand. Just strange that it has never been a problem up until owning this reel.
