Hello all, I'm in the process of making some trolling leaders for muskie fishing. I would like to get some of your opinions on using single stranded steel or fluorocarbon. Also would you use swivels or not not use swivels for trolling. Thank you for your info.

I make my leaders with 120lb flocarbon. the reason behind this is so if the fish rolls in the leader it does not get cut up or slime removed. I use swivels with mine. If you are making them only for trolling cut them 6-8 ft long. Good luck.

I male mine out of 100lb florocarbon for the reasons above. Mine are 3ft long. I make mine with a swivel at the line tie end. If you use a 6ft or longer leader you will need to tie to your line with a uni knot and have your swivel at the snap. I lime the 3ft leader and have had no issues.

Are you ever trolling alone? A 6-ft leader makes it really difficult to net fish, unless you tie the leader to the line as Todd says, so you can get the leader past the tip-eyelet of your rod. I fish alone a lot, and make mine 3-4 ft long with a swivel where it ties to the line. Even so, netting a bigg'un is challenging at times. 100# fluoro is what I use.
