Anyone ever experienced a torn shoulder labrum? Contemplating surgery, but surely don't want to.

I torn mine and had surgery 5 years ago. My shoulder is still junk....I guess it's better than what is was, but not good. I lost range of motion, it still hurts a lot of time, gets sore easily, and fatigues especially muskie fishing. I have trouble doing stuff away from my body and above my head. Any questions feel free to shoot me a pm

Partial tear or torn off? My middle son has had it reattached twice, high school football injuries. It's now held on by a metal ring. The shoulder still bothers him alot. Could be scar tissue that will eventually need to be removed. He has had his meniscus repaired twice and scar tissue removed from there.

Small tear in mine during a wrestling match in college. One doctor wanted to cut me open and the other suggested PT first to see what happens. PT worked. While in College I kept at the lifting routine and I had no pain or recurrence. I have no trouble muskie fishing now 20yrs later.

My father has had 3 surgeries to repair his right shoulder. Nothing quite worked to fix it! He swears it was better before he had any surgeries. His was completely torn. If rehab is an option and it isnt causing much pain I'd try and go that route first.

Thanks for the replies guys. It is a partial tear, and I don't think I've heard a good success story on this kind of surgery. Pretty much all the same ,I understand a complete tear needing the knife, but I'm really swaying to roll the dice on this. It pops in and out when I move my arm certain ways and dam does it hurt.

Doctors didn't say to do anything but keep it immobilized, I guess we'll see. I'm giving it another two weeks, if it's still as painful I may have to reconsider.

Partial tear. Ultra sound therapy and sticking to the exercise plan the rehab doc laid out for me worked.

I was fortunate that my brother was my PT doc and explained it really well. If you have dead arm you'll need surgery and you'll need to stick to the exercises or it's all for naught.

In college I played baseball with a few pitchers who tore theirs. Each one healed differently and it honestly depended on how close they followed the doctors orders and rehab programs. Those who put in the work were alright, the others playing days were over and to this day still have some soreness.

both mine are torn from 25 yrs of lifting... I had an MRI on both a couple summers ago... surgeon advised against surgery unless I was trying to be Mr Olympia...I did some PT but have slacked on it and now my right one hurts doing certain motions... but it's manageable...do the PT exercises..strengthen all the little muscles around it and you should be ok.. mine flares up at times but overall it doesn't hurt too bad casting ....

like bnelson said ,keep exercising to strengthen around it and it will get better ! if you don't the pain returns ! if you want to cast you got to exercise !

Ok I'm as confused as heck here. So no one has had a successful surgery on their shoulders. I'm not sure whether to fault the individuals or the Dr's on this one folks. I've had three successful surgeries to repair rotator tears, labrum tears and bicep tears and my shoulder is as healthy today as when I was 19 before my first and I'm 55.

All I can tell you is the shoulder will become more of an issue the older you get without the fix. I know 67 year olds who cant comb their hair because they never got a shoulder problem fixed.

Roll the dice as you may.

Tore mine 10 years ago bench pressing. Doc told me to stick to a regimen of machines with controlled motion versus free weights and did not advise surgery. Also told me to layoff the heavy weight which i should be doing at 48 anyway lol. I took that route and i have a flare up every once in a while but it rarely bothers me muskie fishing. Shoulder problems stink and they tend to stick with you.

I had mine fixed due to baseball/pitching injuries during college. Both were "successful" in that it's now pain free, I regained strength that was lost when torn, and can still throw a baseball to my kids. My playing days are well over... I did my first trying to comeback to pitch, and my second because I had trouble with general lifting and pulling motions (weakness), which I got back after surgery.

I had a torn rotator cuff, torn labrum, and a bone spur.  Had it scoped 15 years ago.  Followed the rehab program (which was a b----h).   I can fish as hard now as I did 40 years ago.  Range of motion at about 95%.

I have had both shoulders operated on.
My right shoulder had a torn labrum. I could pop it in and out, the back side of the cup. It didn't hurt doing that, but I could never sleep on that shoulder. Tried rehab, but didn't work. Went in for surgery, and they reconstructed it. It was a long road back, about 8 months. It is a lot better!
My left shoulder didn't have to be reconstructed. Just cleaned up.
I am left handed, so it bothers me. I've had a couple of cortizone shots, and the second one really helped!
I can cast all day, and have little pain!
It bothers me occasionally, when sleeping.
Can't do heavy military press, lifting, without a lot of pain in my left shoulder.
Can't throw a football, without pain, but I can fish and golf, with no pain.

Get in with a good ortho with a good reputation. See what they say. Everyone is different. Good physician + following the PT regiment = good success.

The ortho surgeon told me in the case that I have it is a 60% success rate. How they rated success was not gone in to depth. I'm giving it two weeks, to see what happens. I'm only opposed to the surgery from a lot of bad stories as well as this doctor not seeming too confident.

Thanks for the info!

I had surgery in 2006, torn labrum DR. said I would be good as new in 2 to 3 months.
Still have loss of strength and loss of motion. can hardly throw a baseball.
was strong as i could be going in . Went though a very rigid therapy regiment for 6 months (therapy group works with some Timberwolves) Changed therapist as he had some new ideas. same results pain is gone though.
My advice tough it out if you can surgery as last result

It hurt like hell when I did it and for a good while after. Got to the point I couldn't raise my arm very high at all which prompted me to go to the trainer and then doctor. Thankfully following the rehab at the PT relieved the pain and got the strength back. I then followed a shoulder routine to keep it back. Simple stuff that is a bit tedious to do but it worked. Like was mentioned above, everyone is different and my experience no way ensures success in anyone else.

Got something goofy going on with my right shoulder. What are the symptoms of a torn labrum? Need to be throwing batting practice for my 13 y/o in another month.

Post op physical therapy is the key to a successful outcome. It is painful but critical to regain strength and range of motion!

Sure have!
Left shoulder started acting up. Had trouble sleeping on my left side. Went to the Doc. After MRI, I was told I have a torn posterior (back side) labrum, a bone spur and a cyst in my left shoulder. Surgery was recommended.
In the mean time, I continued to work as a law enforcement officer. Our DATT (self defense training) came up so I went to see how my left shoulder would hold up.
To say we trained aggressively would be an understatement!
I ended up tearing the labrum in my right shoulder. Again, surgery was suggested.
The surgeon did a SLAPP repair. Labrum was ground smooth, the bicep tendon was cut off where it attached to the labrum. Tendon was then tied in a knot and inserted in a keyhole slot in my upper arm. A spur was also ground down. 5 months later I was back to work.
Physical therapy is a must. I also was lifting weights before and after the surgery.
3 years later. Right shoulder feels good. Gets a little sore if I use bad form on the bench. Left shoulder is not too bad. Did not have surgery on the left side.
I try not to do any extended reaching above my head. I also lift by keeping my arms closer to my sides, especially when doing curls or other lifting.
I am 1 1/2 years retired from the law enforcement job and feel I can do anything I did before the injury. Oh, I am a month away from turning 57 years old!
Bottom line. Try therapy first. If that does not help, surgery may be your only option. Don't forget the physical therapy!
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Ken

Brad,

Trying to stay off my "podium" here, you have much good info I'm sure. I have had severe issues with some elbow tendinitis stuff yrs back due to a job change. Not shoulder, I know but I had work done in the Twin Cities. Little did I know but after suffering issues following all this (several ops.) my doc sent me to the MAYO CLINIC, Rochester MN. You know of it, I'm sure.

Those guys did an in-depth "pre-op" on me to determine if they could help.

They fixed ALL the issue the other boys on both elbows, totally. IF they can't help they'll give you the best diagnosis avail. IMNSHO.

Please get the best help you can. For my family anymore it's the Mayo man!!! They were excellent. This stuff is serious...don't go with anything but the best.

Good luck.

Jeremy.

tore my labrum and my bicep in highschool during state wrestling, then played an all star football game and finished it off.

Ended up getting opened up in the front and scoped in the back and had some anchors put in, I was told i wont be able to do much. through a grueling rehab i was able to make a full recovery

Well surgery sucked but I was able to play 4 years of college football and benched over 500#, rehab was crucial but my shoulder is great now... and i have a big ass cool scar ha
