Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I have a 20 hp Mercury tiller and the tension bar on the motor is not working right. When I push the bar towards increased tension there is really no tension as compaired to decreased tension. Do any of you know how to tighten up the tension arm?
Thanks,

| Mike, I have a 80 yamaha tiller. Mine has a wing nut on the bar that I just adjust the tension with. |

| Mike,
I've got a 25 Merc and had the same problem last year.
If you look under the front of the motor, just about straight down from the choke, there is a nut about 7/16". The nut faces downward toward the waterline. Tighten that up and it should take care of it. You don't have to pull the cover off to do this. Might be easier to do if you stand outside the boat with it on the trailer and do it from the side of the motor. I would think things would get a little cramped trying to reach under from inside the boat.
Mine works great now.
