Ok...lake was down 34', scads of non aquatic weeds grew all along the bank from the water edge...now the lake is up to full pond, covering all those weeds, which I assume are dead now.
QUESTION: How might all the dead weeds/bushes affect the water content/quality? I'm thinking it screwed up the PH maybe? The fishing seems to be different this year; would all the dead stuff create a problem w/ oxygen, etc.? The lake has some naturally occuring pond weed, but the lake bank was littered w/ acres of a wide variety of weeds etc. that are now covered...any ideas?

I should have known better than to ask me one serious question of the year! Gotta be something screwed up though, w/ all that dead salad giving off various gasses/fumes etc...someone w/ a scientific outlook may stumble onto this post and become poor and infamous...

The decay will affect oxygen levels, and affect the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels of the water. I can't really imagine it messing up the PH though. I'm by no means a chemist, however in my time as a fishkeeper, I've never seen any plant/animal die off affect the PH. Of course I also don't leave the dead material in there for very long.

Sponge,

Why would this phenomenon be any different than the tons of leaves that accumulate every fall and settle to the bottom and decay? Lots of oxygen depletion potential there I'm assuming. Also, are any of those plants that were visible before the pool rose in the "woody" family? "Structure!"

The situation you describe should have a very positive effect on water quality. The weeds and grasses that grow on the newly exposed shoreline act to eat up a good deal of the excess nutrients in the soil and if the shoreline is silty and will also provide a better food souce for waterfowl etc., the exposure to air will enable aerobic bacteria to break down crud that would otherwise just sit in the muck. This is the theory behind the recent drawdowns on the Mississippi river.
