Posts: 59 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Can't get my musky rods to fit all the way into this rod holder. The rods seem too large and/or the casting grip gets in the way. Anyone else have this issue? Ordered from the musky shop, so figured it would fit "musky" rods... Thinking of selling and getting Folbe's.

Posts: 1100 | Are you trying to place a trigger rod in them with the reel "inside the clamp" on the rod holder ?

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Depending on the design of the reel seat the trigger can get in the way. You could modify the rod holder but the easier way is to remove the trigger from the reel seat.

Posts: 483 | really easy to widen the trigger hole with a hacksaw ,thats what i did ! at least you get to use them since you bought them !

Posts: 865 | VERY SIMPLE HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS ....... Simply cut and file the opening on each side of the clamp and lightly file smooth...... I tried to show the area to cut and file with black Dots......Does not affect the strength at all never had one break...Takes 5 minutes each as they are soft metal.. DO NOT CUT YOUR ROD TRIGGER .....Mike

I contacted the owner of Down-East Sportscraft about the Salty's trigger problem with modern muskie rods. I pointed him at this thread, and specifically cast4musky's suggestion and pic, and here was his response:
While this doesn't help anyone right now, maybe we'll see a more muskie-rod-friendly Down-East Salty in the future.

Posts: 59 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Wow, saw this kept going... Hopefully they will make the change. The one I have is powder coated, so I'm not sure I want to cut into it. Might just sell it and go with a different holder. Thanks for the responses.

Posts: 866 Location: NE Ohio | you do know that the rod will work in the holder without putting the trigger into the holder right? just put it around the foregrip instead of the reel seat with the trigger. i have done this for years with everything from cheap bass pro rods to st. croix avids and never have had an issue as long as the rod is level or angled down. have never tried it pointed up in the air though. good luck.
