I have not had much luck with the tails on the squirrely hellhound tails. What are you guys using that works well and holds up a little better?

With not having luck, do you mean not catching, or catching but they get destroyed ?

The tail either gets cut up by the back hook or just falls off. I have one that probably does not have 10 minutes of fishing on it and the tail just fell off in the bottom of the boat.

I use the phantom replacement tails. They seem to hold up good.

If you do want to use a different brand make sure it's very similar to the same size. Otherwise the action gets changed. I would try sanding the butt and supergluing the tail on.

I had the same issue with a squirrelly hellhound, the tail fell off after a half dozen casts. I drilled a hole in the back and epoxied a piece of bucktail wire sticking out about a half inch, similar to how phantom tails are connected. I glued the tail on and so far it has held up.

Or drill a hole, drive a small ~1.5" sheet-metal screw with some superglue on it about 1/2 way in and then cut the screw head off. Then twist the replacement tail on, and use some superglue, too.
