I've heard about using a treble hook (with barbs clipped) on the leader.

I've heard about a soda straw that has been cut and flared on the line.

Any other helpful tips to keep weeds off your lure when trolling?

I use the treble with barbs clipped. I use a long length of Braid or Fluro with a swivel at the top and bottom (Think long leader) and I clip the Treble to the top swivel. Doesn't cost much and works like a charm.

I'm using weed guards made by Handlebarz. You can make your own from bucktail wire?

^^ also in conjunction with the weed guards attached ahead of the 5' leader we like to troll with the rod tips dunked in the water.

When I make my leaders I leave 18" or so long at the swivel.

i run 40" long leaders and where i tie onto this leader at the swivel with a snap from the main line i run the tag end about 4" long then clip it off. works great. to fend off the floating weeds i always run my rod tips in the water 6 or 8 inches.

I put Rod tips down 1- 3 ft. In The water, then use long leaders 40-48", and use a 4/0 crane to catch any that get away from me.
