Could have posted this with the Front question I suppose.
I wonder if the dangling lure catch I had last night has ever happened to anyone else.
Went out last night fighting an incomming storm. 49 degrees and raining on us, hard at times. Got one beautiful young ski (only about 32-34 inches)and 5 bonus smallmouth bass. 3 of them went 3-5 lbs, they were nice even tho I was targeting esox. I caught a northern on a spoon that was dangling about two feet in the water on a rod I had set down to cast with another. What a surprise, lucky it wasn't bigger or the rod might have followed it into the drink. I noticed the rod tip jumping and picked it up and this silly little pike about 24 inches was hooked.
I won't be leaving lures hanging in the water on an unattended rod anymore. Too much hard earned dough might slip off to davey jones locker.

Last year my brother was boucing a lure in and out of the water right at the boat and a mid 40" muskie came up and grabbed it, soaking me and scared the ####! out of both of us.  I don't know how he managed to not break my rod because the fish went under the boat and tried taking the rod with, but he got it turned and it came back and it was just gone,  I think he forgot to set the hook!!  I will never leave one dangling in or above the water again unless I'm holding it or it is in a rod holder.

I constantly remind my family not to leave a bait of any kind dangling over the boat. Too many top line predators take a look at the offering and try to ruin the trip. It HAS however, made me wonder how to impart the "Boatside" action to my baits when I work them!

The first Musky I ever caught was when I was 15 and I as fishing from my uncle's dock. Being from a walleye fishing family I had no muskie gear but wanted to catch a muskie in this lake that was stocked with tigers. I was casting a home made bait (I took a mister twister sassy shad and added a beetle spin blade to it) for about 15 minutes when my dad came down to the dock and asked "what are you trying to catch with that?" As I reeled the bait up I turned to answer him and heard a splash and felt weight thrashing on the end of my line. A young tiger literally jump out of the water and grabbed the bait that was dangling a few inches over the water hooking himself. As I layed the fish on the dock to get the hook out he flopped and the hook popped out and back in the lake he went. At that moment all I wanted to catch were muskies.
