Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | By Gerard Hellenbrand Olin Launch, Lake Monona – On November 2, 2015 the Capital City Chapter of Muskies, Inc. had a shipment of Leech Lake Strain muskies delivered to Lake Monona from the Minnesota Muskie Farm. The day was very sunny and air temps at 70 with strong southwest winds. That’s a far cry from the day we tagged two years ago where we had to be cautious of ice on the ramp. The MN Muskie Farm truck arrived at about noon and the WDNR was ready to go and do the PIT tagging. After setting up a holding net in the lake, we were able to transfer the fish from the truck to the holding net. Then the fish were drugged, fin clipped, PIT tagged, then measured. The fish were then placed into a large tank until they come out of the effects of drug. Then they were transported to another large tank in the WDNR boat and when enough were in the tank, motored out to weedy areas of the lake and set free. The WDNR staff on hand was Tim Simonson, Kurt Welke, Mike Rennicke, Lori Tate, Heidi Nelson, Bradd Sims, Kim Kuber, and Iyob Tsehaye. We also had some help from club members like Dave Lundey, Brett Cook, Duffy Kopf. Geoff Crandall, Lee Bartolini, Gerard Hellenbrand, and Gary Hoffman plus a good support of on lookers. In the end we PIT tagged 501 muskies that averaged 11.6 inches and the largest was 14.5 (and there were several around that size). It was noted that this year’s stock was much larger than the past few years They were placed into the lake and we did see one grabbed by a seagull and a few more may have also been taken by gulls. We had a maybe 4 or 5 that escaped the handling process prior to tagging. You know those muskies, somehow manage to get away. The Capital City Chapter would like to thank the WDNR staff for their help on this and the generous support received by its members and sponsors/donors. Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Lake Monona is 3274 acres. Here the report for the WDNR stocking the month before. Yahara River Chain - On Sept 16th, 2015 the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources stocked the lakes of Monona, Waubesa, and Wingra with muskies from the Tommy Thompson Hatchery located in Spooner, WI. This strain of fish were from spawn taken from the Chippewa River system earlier this spring. The day prior, WDNR personal Scot Stewart and Scott Harpold traveled to the hatchery in Spooner and PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tagged 600 of them. The numbers are as follows, in Monona a total of 1340 were stocked of which 521 had tags in them. In Waubesa (2080 acres) a total of 832 were stocked and Wingra (345 acres) received 82 PIT tagged fish. On Lake Monona several members and friends were on hand to help out with placement of fish into the lake. The condition of the muskies were noted by members as being extremely healthy as they looked well fed after a being fed minnows in that past few days at the hatchery. They averaged 12.1 inches and many were nearly 13 inches, they even witnessed the results of one muskie that attacked another and they both didn’t survive the skirmish. On hand to help WDNR were John Cuta and Tracy Lombardi to scatter the fish in weedbeds. | ||
