Posts: 470 | Hey All, Been having a real problem with muskies "Headhunting" the Medussa. I've lost 3-4 fish who left nothing but teeth marks in the head of the Medussa. Seems they are grabbing it on the drop by the front of the lure (Aka Headhunting). My question is this: Does anyone add a stinger hook to the top of the lure like I've seen done on Bondy Baits? If so, how did you do it and has it been effective for this type of fish? Any assistance appreciated, RandalB

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | IMO the Medusa swimbait is one of the best strike inducing swimbaits on the market.... Lots of stuff moving water and moving around.... With that said I have had a lot of guys add a treble hook to the front of my tubes and swimbaits and report it really helps hookups. I am not sure where I heard it but it was at a musky show seminar a few years ago...approximately 80% of muskies will strike at the head of a bait and that sounds right as a aqua predator will try to immobilize its "food" with a violent strike and then come in from the head of the "food" so its does not impact backwards facing spinal bones (dorsal fins). In other words, it stuns the "food" and then takes it from the head so it can swallow it whole and not die from having the fish stuck in its throat..... Sounds like a good paper Our tube baits actually have the front treble hook near the nose of the bait for this reason. Put a 3/0 wide gap treble hook on the nose and have fun!!! James

Any assistance appreciated, RandalB Slip the eye of the treble over the bait eyelet and snap the bait on or secure it with a split ring as pictured. Location: SE Wisconsin | Sometimes when a fish eats the whole bait, no matter how hard you rear into your hookset, driving those hooks home can be a matter of luck with any rubber bait because the head of the lure is jammed into the front of the muskies mouth/jaws. with no room to pull the bait and bury those hooks in those moments, it's a 50/50 chance those hooks get buried when the fish opens it's mouth and the bait starts to come out from the tension of your line. That is most likely why the head of your Medussa is so shredded, not necessarily because the fish are attacking it's head. When a fish T-bones a rubber bait and you rear into your hookset, the teeth glide through the rubber until the hooks bury and the fight is on. Hopefully this picture I quick drew in Paint tool that looks like a 2nd grader drew it gets my point across... LOL Attachments ---------------- rubber bait.PNG (8KB - 371 downloads)
