That magic metal clink. A pacemaker, a klak bait, twisted sister or a lake x you added split rings to. All these baits make a metal tapping sound that draws in the fish.

What situation draws you to that metal click and what makes it shine the most in your eyes. I am kinda new to the metal click and have not put together a pattern on when it really shines.

Will the click hold up till ice up? When, where and how do you take advantage of it?

Thanks for any feed back!

Fell in love with metallic sounding lures back in the mid eighties after I build a few of my own custom Flaptails.  I really like the sound around Rock. think the metallic sounds really are exaggerated  with the hard bottom!

Interested to hear more about split rings on Lake X. What does that do

Love Big Tooth's Klack bait. Once the blade calcifies a bit and you get it bent right to the point that the blade is clacking the body right, it's a big confidence bait. When it's tuned right and broken in, you can feel the "klack" when it gets near the boat, which makes me wonder how nuts it must drive the fish...Or maybe I'm just smokin klack.

Lake X and Pacemakers have worked very well for me. I throw them all year in every range of conditions and depths and they produce. A lot of guys wait for your classic topwater conditions or locations and they are missing out. Late summer and early fall (now) they seem to shine the most. Adding a split ring to the lake x makes the tick louder.

darkness it shines. slow slow slow. globe with the screws backed out or hawgwobbler are personal favorites of mine.

burning a rattler has been a great daylight search bait for me this season. that thing is noisy.

I have done well with early and late ice along with sight fishing the basin at those times.

Yep! drag those babies over clear ice and watch those fish peck at em like a bird hitting a window.

I love that metal sound. I have a double 10 that the blades hit and make a sound like that.

I like the comment about using baits like that with hard grounds like rock. I would use my current bait anywhere but especially if it is going to be a harder bottom.

for whatever reason we have had good luck with metallic sounding baits like Globes, Rough Runners etc after a cold front when fish are shallow and September... of course they work all season but at times i've seen fish go silly for that metallic chatter!

I added 2 split rings to a Cannonball Jr last week. 2 things stand out when you do this. 1) The hook swings free- reducing leverage a large fish may put on your bait to throw it. 2) The hook hits the tail hard and is loud. Most of the hook now looks silver.

2 things with the Lake X - lures- you must sharpen hooks often and the paint gets beat up fast. Nothing like a cool looking beat up bait that catches fish.

So for pacemakers and top raiders you guys add a split ring to the front and rear hook so it hits the blade and klacks louder?

Normally don't need to add any rings to a Tapdancer type lure(pacemaker etc) as they are designed to click out of the box. Adding rings and changing hooks on other tail baits can induce a click to some, though will destroy action if the correct hook placement/spacing isn't realized. Be careful on a two hook lure such as a topraider, as you really don't want that front hook getting too far back, as most fish head hunt the lure to begin with.

I actually prefer my Lake X lures not to click, but that's personal preference. I have so many clickers already, that the fish/I really like the action of that line-up on their own merit. A couple of mine have enough metalic magic in the form of squeek, that no further clicking is desired.

Don't forget the varying metalic sounds produced by varying wing bend/wing composition/wing bracket assembly/spinner bend, on your creepers. There are a handful of basement lure builders that have paid for more than one summer vacation by being able to reproduce certain deadly 'sounds'. Same can be said for wobblers. They're not all created equal or for like situations.

If you want to make that magic clicking sound even more unique try using cotter pins in different diameters and materials. I have had good luck with brass, aluminum, and stainless steel.
With a Twistd Sister you will need the cotter pin to be 2.5" in length and then trim it down so the pin is making contact with blade .

Sometimes I think if muskies could hear fishermen's conversations they'd just laugh and say "What the he!! are they talking about?!"
