Is there any real difference in using some regular 80w-90 Gear Lube like the Penzoil in the yellow bottle versus one marketed specifically for marine lower units?

I've used it for the past 25 years with no problems. Got the idea when I noticed the local boat dealer filling one out of a 120# drum of automotive gear oil. I'm sure a lot of dealers would tell you no, but it has the same specs as lower unit oil. I have asked several marine mechanics and no one could give me a good reason not to. Like I said, it works.

Just make sure the grease doesn't void your warranty.
