Posts: 485 Location: On my favorite lake! | Any one have any tips for fishing lake of the woods, 2 week in august. I am guessing the algae bloom will be in effect. Bright Colors? Please let me know what you have had luck on. Thanks, Ed

Posts: 366 | Yes there is a bloom issue, but pay attention to the wind and reference it with your map to see what areas will be clear and which will not. It can be a little more effort than running anywhere you want in July, but at the same time you're just as likely find somebody on a spot you want to fish in July as you are to have a spot be pea soup in August. That's the great thing about going in August when alot of guys will avoid it like the plague. The wind will concetrate the bloom for the most part, making sum areas less than ideal, but there are still plenty of sections that don't ever really get greened up if you know what to look for. A couple times I've caught my biggest fish of the season on the woods in late Aug. early Sept. Don't be afraid to move around, cause there is always clean water out there some where. Too many guys go there earlier in the season and get familiar with an area then go back the next year later in the season and get frustrated because the mile or so section they had their hearts set on fishing is too green. It's like someone jerked their comfort blankie out of their hands right before nap time. As far as bright colors go, sure that and noise makers are always going help stack the deck in your favor. One thing I have noticed is you may not get 30 follows a day of curious window shoppers, but the muskies you do make contact with will be serious about what they want. So that being said the action may seem slower, but you can catch just as many muskies in August if you put the effort in. No matter what time you go, as long as there's no ice, you're still on the finest muskie lake this planet has to offer. Good Luck, Ryan

Posts: 119 Location: Sioux Narrows | Most of the guys have said it, find clean water. You may not be to bad off that time of season for bloom yet. August can be a great time of year to fish, boat numbers are down and your sense of what to fish has increased. What part of LOTW are you fishing? Good luck and catch a hawg. D'arcy Finlan

Posts: 5874 | D'arcy, Are you going to make an appearance at the outing. Sure would be great to finally put a face with the name. And, while you're there, perhaps we all could have a "Live" chat session, with you as the honored guest. Saturday is spaghetti night. hint, hint Perhaps you could give us the latest lowdown on the Bay to give us a jump start.

Posts: 656 Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Good advice has been given here, so I won't beat a dead horse. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned is weeds. Yes, I know that the bloom kills the weeds and the muskies are in a "transition" period from weeds to rocks, but there are still some green weeds to be found and there still are fish in them. If you can find green HEALTHY cabbage in those west facing sandy shored pockets the fish will still be in there. But for the most part it is starting to become a rock bite or a rock and weed combo bite. Good Luck
