Hey guys, *first post*. I am extremely new to muskie fishing but absolutely love it.

I recently just purchased my first muskie pole. I went with a St. Croix Mojo Muskie 8 foot Medium Heavy. I paired this with a Abu Garcia Revo Stx low profile reel. My question is what exactly can I throw and not throw with this setup. The pole is rated for 3/4 oz. to 3 oz. lures. I'm wondering if I can throw double 10 cowgirls (or smaller cowgirl setups) and big bucktails. Obviously I know I can't throw pounders or bigger bulldogs (will have to wait a while for a new setup). I just don't want to destroy my first reel because I spent a good amount of money on it (for me). If anyone has any information on this reel let me know.

probably (definitely) wont want to throw double 10 bucktails with that reel. Rod would be fine.

You could probably throw some very small bucktails with double blades or some slightly bigger single bladed ones. All kinds of bucktails, big and small, catch fish well.

That reel is more suited for bass. great reel, and is technically capable of handling a musky and some musky lures, but it has limitations for use as a dedicated musky reel.

If you really want to get into double tens, an inexpensive option would be to look for a used reel that is more suited for casting and retrieving big lures. You dont need a big expensive reel and several combos, dozens of lures, etc. Lots of people on here will ignore this fact and tell you to buy a bunch of stuff you dont need.

Yes I figured that and I'm totally fine with it. I wanted to get a lighter setup at first so I can gain experience and still use this pole to troll target big pike. At some point I will get a bigger setup with a nicer reel but like I said, for now, just wondering what kind of stuff I can throw. Thanks for the quick reply.

Cow girls of any size are out. Your going to want to look at single bladed Bucktails or very small doubles. I think Blue fox Twin Turbos in size 7 would be a possible option.

Any other suggestions on some lighter stuff I could use with the Abu Garcia Revo STX?

Hope this helps sent it to another member:

I PM'd you because of all the flack I would get for suggesting these reels but I have the same issues with getting Lefty reels and for the last few years I have been getting my reels at ffo-tackle.com it is the outlet store for Abu, Mitchell, Pflueger, Berkely, Fenwick, and others. I have been buying the Revo Stx in 6:1 and 7:1 Leftys and throw Shadillac, Mag Dawgs, Jerks, Glides with no issues. They have the same brass gears as the Toro and the Stx I have have 24lbs of drag the newer models 20lb I think. I am currently looking at a Winch for my 10's to replace an old Pflueger Trion round reel I use for 10's and Pounders, and Bucket Heads. The Stx's are $138 the line capacity is smaller but plenty for muskies.

Have been using them since '08 I throw showgirls with them great. You just cannot throw 10's or pounder's. And if I'm throwing Kraves and ripping it I thumb the spool.
My FB page has a nice 41" musky my son caught ripping a 10" Redhorse Krave.

Hope this helps!

Go to the swap meet at o-gara's next winter during the musky expo. You can buy gear at an ultra low price. I promise you it will be worth your time!

I have 2 Stx size reels. One a revo winch on the same for you have and I almost exclusively throw small musky spinnerbaits with it like northland bionic bucktails and similar sized other brands. Need a relaxing moment threw a week of fishing. I have got a few 42" fish on it and I do question its ability to land a 56" but I still whip fish in so probably going to be ok. The other is a 7.1 revo inshore. Small inline spinners like butcherbaits tinbucks and model 700. On a 7'9" bass swimbait rod. Faster retrieve.

I know I can throw and bring in any lure I own 13's and regular dogs. But speed would be slow and many muskies like speed. Also it you were to get a backlash with a revo and a big lure I don't see that going well. Good leaders are a must 80# probably going to be right for you.

Since you're getting lures for the first time just remember not to try to bomb them way out there let the rod and weight of the lure give you distance.

That being said the sooner you can try a reel like a NACL the sooner you realize how much easier the lures return. My dad was content with 70$ reels for bass and musky till I gave him a NACL with double 10's and it retrieved easier than his baby girls. He has since upgraded everything and he is an old dog stuck in his ways.
