Goingup to red wing lodge the beginning of July and thinking about taking a guide for a day at the beginning of the trip. Thoughts on if a guide would be worth it and recommendations would be great.

The resort owner should gladly mark up your map...it's in his best interest to put you on fish.

I thought i would need a guide when i went to canada for the first time but Justin at Mylies pointed us in the right direction and we never needed a guide.

I've never stayed at Red Wing but maybe someone that has will comment if the owner provides that for you.

I agree with the above. Mike will point out some locations and keep you in the loop. I used to visit Sabaskong/Red Wing Lodge/Mike 3 or 4 times a summer/Fall... you'll catch some fish, and see plenty.

More importantly,,,make sure you get the "rocks that are silver" marked these are the ones that have wrecked lower units and stainless props the rocks are silver from prop encounters,,,not a lot in sabaskong but a few you need to be awar of,,, the one off horseshoe island and the one to the right of the island coming out of red wing.
Ask Mike to mark these.

If you want a fun day with a guide, seek out Brian Major. This guy is a blast to fish with. He'll take to his 2nd best spots all day long! hehehe

If you go to Red Wing Lodge, don't try to play pool in the lodge while the owners and family are eating dinner. Sheesh.

I was at Red Wing Lodge last August. Mike will mark your map, but you will need the Sabaskong Bay map #6214. That's the only good one for navagation. I got my map from Thorne Brothers. It took Mike a good 20 minutes to give you the full brief - listen carefully and take notes!
