| What size kicker would be best in regards to gas usage and reduced wear and tear?
I have a 19' aluminum deep V and am getting a kicker for it to troll for muskies and walleyes. I have found three different 4 stroke motors in three different sizes and don't know which one would be best. All three appear to be in same condition. All in good shape with minimal use, about the same year for the same price.
9.9 hp merc
15 hp merc
25 hp yamaha
Any advice is appreciated. |

| Thanks for the reply. I'm sure a 9.9 will work, but I'm wondering if the 15 or 25 hp would work better? If a bigger motor would run at lower rpms and use less gas and create less wear and tear? |

Location: Eastern Ontario | I would go 15 HP. I would try to find a Yamaha or Honda which in my opinion are much quieter than Merc's . Suzuki's are nice if you have a dealer in your area but not as widely available.

| Thanks for the replies. I was thinking the 25 would be overkill myself but since they're the same price I wanted to figure out why one size would be better than the other?
What's the advantage of using 9.9 vs a 15 or 25? |

| The 9.9 and the 15 Merc are the same size/weight motors, so, I might be tempted to go to the 15, price being the same? The 25 Yammy would be heavier, so you have that to think about.
Are these portables, or true kickers with the heavy duty brackets and tilt trim. A true kicker is designed to be tilted up when running the big motor. Portables present issues with broken tilt brackets and motor mounts when strapped down using a 2X4, etc. Don't think the 25 Yammy is a true kicker, but the Merc's could be? |

| All 3 motors were used on pontoons. They all have controls but none them have power trim. Should I avoid motors without power trim? |

Location: Eastern Ontario | I would want power tilt and trim and if you do a lot of trolling an alternator. You don't want to go to start your big motor at the end of the day and find your electronics and possibly downriggers have run your batteries down. On a 19 foot boat I would want a 15 HP it may have to bring you home in dirty weather. I have two friends on the Larry that use 20 HP Yamaha kickers on a 19 foot Tyee and a 20 foot Barron ( Lund )
