Hello. I am wanting a rod for throwing smaller baits but mostly small bucktail (< double 9's and single blades). I would like to keep cost under $250. I will likely be paring it with a Calcutta 300D that I have with 65# braid. I was thinking of getting the 9' MH TI telescopic rod and hoping they have a sale in July. Do any of you have other suggestions that I should consider?

I have the TI XH that I prefer for smaller bucktails. I would think the MH would be a hair too light for 9's but would be ok for small bucks.

A double 9 still really pulls hard so like Kirby said, stick with XH. I had an XH 9' from TI and it was good for exactly what you described. I swapped it out for the new TI 9 1/2 foot XH Tele and will definitely replace my other rods with that line of blanks as I inevitably break them. The new 9 1/2 foot is as close to a perfect bucktail rod as I've ever used.

I really like my Okuma 8'6 or 9'3 XH .As mentioned above double 9s still pull pretty hard and will be a lot of work in the figure 8 if you go too light.

st. croix mojo muskie 8' MM80MHF 20 - 50 lb. line, 3/4 to 3 oz lures. a soft tip for the lighter baits and enough back bone for good hook sets. WELL under your budget! good luck.

The 9' TI MH is too light for 9's, but perfect for smaller blades

Sorry, I think my post wasn't clear. I meant for bucktails less then double 9's. Single blades, 8's, and smaller. I have the XH TI but it is a bit too heavy for the smaller stuff. I prefer it for my Dadson 9mm and up. As long as the MH is not too much of a step down from the XH I am leaning toward that. I really want something that will load better on the cast without being too weak on the retrieve. From what I am reading you guys are saying the MH TI would be good for that?

For what it's worth, I love throwing Jr. Double Cowgirls (Double 9s, I believe) with my Ti 9' MH.

I have the 9' TI XH & MH that I've used to throw buck tails. For the smaller single bladed bucks I prefer using the TI MH because it loads up better & casts them further with less force than the XH & that helps save on the back & shoulder. For the double 9's the TI XH is the better option due to the pull of the lure & won't wear you out as much.

Anyone's medium rod will handle small bucktails with no issues.

It's really nice after using a really heavy rod all day to switch up to a small lure on a MH. As easy as muskie fishing gets without cup holders.
