Posts: 14 Location: Moorhead, MN | Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody has used these two plastic baits and what time of year do use them and what kind of action do they make. Because I saw them at scheels this weekend thought about buying them.

Posts: 32922 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I use Dawgs some, mostly in a swimming/jigging motion as I cast, allow the lure to sink near the bottom, and retrieve. In the shallow stuff, I work the Dawg like a jerk bait, more or less. No idea if this is right, but the fish seem to bite 'em. Can't help with the Shallow Invader, anyone else?

![]() Posts: 2061 Location: Belgium | I use the shallow invader but every pike that has hit this thing, got off again despite the hook modification I did on it. I inserted a small 2" leader on the rear hook hanger and added a splitring and hook on the other end. Then I stick one point of the treble in the plastic tail. I see them grab it but I can't seem to hook them properly. I just crank it in

I love the bulldogs. I've got two 30lbs in 13 days on them before. If you want fish weeds with them you can. You do more reeling than jerking. Straight retreive works good too. Or you do what Worrall does. Work it like a jerkbait. Jig it up and down, swing it side to side. This bait works all the time especially when a cold front comes through. If you didn't buy one you should. I hope this helps you out.

Hi.The Shallow Invader is a super twitch bait.On the pauses the tail drives em nuts.Wouldn't think of fishing anywhere, any type water, without one along anymore.

DickP Assuming hooks are sharpened, do you do any mods to the ShallowInvader to better the hook-up percentage? There has been talk of this bait not being a great hooker. BrianF. Twin Cities

Posts: 743 | Justin, i'm a dawg fan too...i probably throw them too much...however, i'm curious what size produces well in KY? I always say, if you gonna be throwing a dawg, better be throwing the magnum...But, after another skunk trip to KY, i'm curious what size you like to toss? tomcat Edited by tomcat 5/7/2003 8:58 AM

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Shallow Invaders are good for water under 50 degrees. I have found, as well as many of my fishing buddies that come late October-November these things really produce. I modify the lure the easies way possible. No need to rig up anything crazy. I simply take a large 100 lbs. Berkly cross snap, attach it to the back hook hanger, and hang a hook off of the cross snap. I bury one of the hooks into the tail, and it does not lose any of the action. I have also found that giving them a SUPER twitch is the best method. Not just a lazy tap, but ripping the thing up, down, to the left, etc..... When it pauses, WHAM!!!! Hope this helps, Mike Hulbert

Any thoughts on the best colors for the BullDawgs ? I just got my first in Blk/Orange. I fish off colored water in N Wisconsin.

The only size for me on Cave Run is the middle size. I don't why it might just be in my head. Accasionally I will throw the mag for the big tail action it has. Now the new bull dogs have a little bigger tail. If you come to KY. the middle is the one for me. The best colors for me are sherbet, chart. belly/black back, just plain black, motoroil works good for me too. Hopes this helps you out when come back.

Hi Brian.I've tried a number of modifications but frankly see no real difference in hooking.('hooking'ability is opinion and confidence, not science but...)Where I'm now at is simply lightly putting one of the hooks of the rear treble in the forward part of the tail.As Mike said,no effect on the action.I will try his system however cause its still simple. I don't feel the lure has a serious hooking problem.I am using it slowly most of the time and nearly every nice fish hits the head and hooks up.The faster, more erratic I go,the lower the hooking %'s but thats a ditto on nearly every lure except some bucktails and spinner baits so...??? First summer I used it guiding we went 5 fish over 48 before losing a big one.I'll accept that ratio anytime.
