Do you guys have some recommendations on some 8s that will consistently spin? I have tried several different brands, but can't seem to find any that consistently engage on their own. Thanks for the help.

I think they are actually considered 7's, but to me look about like regular 8's:
I had pretty good luck with the Mepps Musky Marabou doubles last year. I bought one just before a trip to LOTW and it turned out to be my best bait. Pulled easy, cast easy, spun well, and caught fish.

Actually I think Mag 8s are more like normal 9s if anything. brand wise I am not sure what is the best. That said, the blades spinning has more to do with the clevises then anything else. adjust your clevises or "tune" them to your liking. bend them, straighten them align them with the other one. you can get any bucktail to spin consistently 100% of the time with a little tweaking

Most manufacturers blades are too light. It drives me nuts when they won't engage. Those first few feet of the cast are critical.

I'd suggest mepps as mentioned and dadsons. Both have heavier blades and spin better than most.

Try thumbing the spool before the lure hits the water.

Dadsons and Spankys are the two 8s I have found that start/spin well...

Hirsch Ghosttails put in there ad "Every Ghosttail is assembled with solid brass hardware and they spin the first time--every time!" Never used them but sounds like a pretty solid guarantee. I did buy one not long ago and plan on trying it out this summer. Lets see if it holds up the way they say it will.

Had the same dilemma last year, looking for a small, double-bladed bucktail that started up right away, without any blade hesitation and without snap-snap-snapping the rod tip to get the thing spinning. Dropped a crap load of $'s out of frustration trying to find 'the one' bait that spun-up immediately - first time, every time. Tested probably eight or nine of the recommended brands, except the Spanky, which many on here highly recommend. While some of the brands were definitely disappointing, most of the baits I tested spun-up nicely most of the time. However, one brand stood out above the rest IMO. In terms of starting right away - the first time, every time - my testing gave the nod to Muskie Metal baits. These baits are unique in that they are made on flexible wire. I'm not sure if and how that flexible design made such a difference, but the baits I tested were excellent in terms of the consistency and quickness in which the blades engaged and spun-up. The blade response was immediate and exactly what I was hoping to find. Will be buying a few more at the MN Musky Expo in April, that is for sure. And, no, I'm not in any way associated with the company or receive products for endorsement.

My $.02.

Another easy thing to try if you want to is to flatten the blades a little. Most of the small blades are really light and the pressure from pulling them through the water can sometimes pin them to the shaft of the bucktail if they don't start right away. If you flatten the blades a bit it will give the blade more lift and make them flare out farther from the shaft. If you are having problems with small blades engaging and they have a decent cup to them, flattening them a bit typically helps. That's been my experience anyway. Good luck!

Second the suggestion on Handlebarz. Mike's lures are bullet proof - cast awesome and run true every time. Great colors too

I bought 7 double 8 Spankys last year after fishing with a guide that had them.
Every one of them spun right away. Have had a lot of problems with other brands also. I will be buying more spankys at show this weekend

Are the spanky 8's the same size as a showgirl?

The Spanky fireball which is a double 8 is heavier and larger in size than the showgirl. It has two treble hooks and the wire seems much heavier. They also run a bit deeper than a showgirl.

Size yes but thicker. They are the only bucktail I have been buying now. Showgirls tend to not start spinning right away too. IMO spanks are much better for the same price.

Spanky Dbl 8s have always done well in my boat. They spin every time they hit the water. Their heavier construction makes them run a little deeper, and can stand up to multiple fish, without compromising the integrity of the bait. I also like the fact they are a little cheaper in cost, without sacrificing quality.

Check with R&M Musky Shop in Eagle River. Mark will make you any size, color, or blade shape, and the prices are very reasonable. https://m.facebook.com/rmmusky?refsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com...

Spanky's. Didn't believe the hype 'til I tried them. They seem to spin immediately every time and they ride a little lower in the water at normal retrieve speed due to extra weight. They also cast better than average bucktails because of the weight. I'm told dadsons are very similar in construction and functionality

I've had moments of wanting to toss showgirls out the backside of my boat...but I have caught so many #*^@ fish on them that it's hard for me to change it up. I am not a fan of the bigger beads some of the other brands use on the smaller bucktails like 8's

Spanky's always spin. Heavier though and not my first choice for shallow rocks or heavy weeds. But otherwise are bulletproof. I like Mepps Double Bladed Musky Marabous a lot as far as always working. Double Showgirls work great, when they work... Tom.
