Sorry, any article involving peta isn't worth reading.. They are nuts and should not be taken seriously.

Unfortunately the Study was not done by PETA it was done some Brit Scientist. The study will give PETA some fuel. Although there is another study out there that refutes this one, PETA is not likely to remember that one.

Expect a lot of misinformation to be spewed over this.

In the perspective of SWorral---Here we go giving fish human attributes again.

A fishes brain is no where near the complexity of a humans.

I'm sure fish do feel pain, but this can not be compared in the perspective of human pain.

I would sure hope peta would focus more on the hunting and livestock issues, then on fishing. I would think a deer, cow or pig's nervous system would be many times closer to a human's then a fish.

Next thing you know, Americans will be vegetarians because of PETA.

Isn't eating vegetables, killing vegetables?

Get real, humans are predators.

I love the bumber stickers which read People Eating Tasty Animals.

I think I will stop now. I am done venting.

A one celled organism will react to 'discomfort', too, by moving away, or flexing. The concept that fish can feel pain is absolutely ridiculous, as they do NOT have the brain mass to process the information and feel 'pain' as we know it. Yes, if there is a stimulous,  the fish will move away from discomfort if possible, but do not then process that information and think OWWW! That HURTS!!. Sheesh. In fact, if one of my bluegills gets parasites, it will scratch it's sides on the gravel, too. But it isn't thinking," man I itch, wish I had some ich meds, or maybe a good dose of copper sulphate or something"...

There is nothing new indicated from that study, as the receptors are NOT the key and were known to be there in sharks a long time ago. The brain ability which requires a cerebral mass to process that information IS. Fish do not have that brain mass. Dismiss this stuff as trivia, because that is what it is. Besides, they studied a TROUT, for goodness sakes. Doc Esox, where are you when I need your commentary?

And PETA can kiss my nevermind. TWICE!! I am a hunter, and will continue to be. I harvest much of my own food, and don't play in the never- never world these folks do eating at restaraunts built with the wood of disappearing rain forests. heated by oil taken from depleting reserves and burned into compounds that pollute the air, driving their nice clean gas guzzling SUV models cars over countless helpless toads and frogs on the way home after buying food in sterile containers from blazingly lighted stores in the cities where contact with fish, deer, rabbits, birds, and other animals is so common. I GUARANTEE I feel pain, right now after reading that drivel. Right in my hinder. Venison, anyone?

Not a direct refute of that study, but it gives some good scientific reasoning that fish do not "feel pain".

Overall, I guarantee that musky fishermen feel more pain than muskies do. Who said, "I fish for muskies because it feels so good when you stop".

It's unfortunate if true, but I don't think we can change the minds of people who have their minds made up.

I thought PETA was short for;

Please Eat The Animals Aren't they some kind of Kill'em and Grill'em group!

These idiots really go out of their way to make a statement. I wish I had their free time -- I would do more FISHING!!!!!!!

The article that disputes the british one can also be found in the North American Fishing clubs magazine. I'll see if I can scan a copy to post here.

SteveW....haven't had time to respond cause I have been down in Montana catching some of those over-sensitive, nocirecepted, slimy trout!! Fished for parts of two days last week and caught about 50 trout, including several browns over 20". It was a hoot! Used mostly rapalas...the fly fisherman were getting skunked due to the rainbows still being on the spawn.

And yes, I totally agree with Steve....there ain't enough brain mass of fish to have such a complex reaction as we feel pain. Plus I just couldn't be like the PETA people....have you ever looked into all those cute little "eyes" on a potato right before you mash it?? The horror, the pain those poor little taters are subjected too. And how about steaming fresh broccoli??? What could be more barbaric the boiling the little fuzz heads alive. We need to all start eating dirt. But what about the nematodes???

I think the study is so full of it. It will give everyone who did it brown eyes. How do they equate what they did with pain. I don't believe for a minute that a fish feels pain from a hook in the mouth. I will contact Peta and request another interview with them on my radio show, this ought to be good. I will tape it and when my website is up I put up the transcript for your reading.

In the grand scheme of things the PETA losers are just a very small minority of people. They are extremely out numbered by us MEAT eaters, I look at them as a nuisense, kind of like mosquitos.
