Location: Morgantown, WV | I came across an older post regarding making baits that hunt/wander. A couple people said they "detune" factory crankbaits to make them unstable (such as a jake). Can anyone give me tips about how to do so? |

Location: Money, PA | There is a way to make a bait have a random "kick" or run off a bit; however, making it consistently hunt or walk side to side when its originally meant to have a wobble/roll, but run straight isn't really realistic if you ask me. There are many factors which are necessary to make a bait consistently "hunt"....lip angle, lip size, lip shape, size and shape of the bait itself and the weight of the bait. All this takes experimentation.
In your case (Jake or Grandma Lure) lose the split ring off the front and experiment with a few things. First, try bending the lead eye off a bit left or right. There is a fine line to getting it to run off a bit and not staying in the water especially at higher speeds. You can also try bending the belly hanger off in opposite directions and setting the belly weight off balance a bit. These alterations "may" and I mean may help you get a random kick out, but if you truly want a "hunting" action, I would recommend getting yourself some baits specifically made with that particular action.
