I have been using some Gamakatsu magic eye 23RB hooks on certain lures and like them a lot,but was wondering if anyone is using the Gamakatsu ST 4x strong. Other than being stronger than the magic eyes,and im assuming a bit heavier,im just wondering if there is a big difference between the two, as I like the magic eyes for smaller twitch baits assuming they are lighter.Just curious for those using them which they prefer as I need to get some more for all size baits .Thanks Ray

Hy Ray,

absolutely no need to use 4 x japanese hooks for muskys in my opinion. In Europe we use Gamakatsu 23 or Owner St. 41 2x strong hooks to catch large catfish (150 pounds and more) in current.

The 4 x strong hooks are made for sea fishing on tuna not for lame muskys or pike.

unless they have changed recently you always had to go to a 4x to get a 5/0 hook from Gamakatsu... too bad they don't make 7/0 and 8/0 as well.

The heavier wire used to make 4x hooks makes them harder to drive into a bony fish jaw when setting the hook, too. I don't believe anything more than 2x is normally needed unless you're expecting to catch that 65-incher that's out there somewhere...

What he said. I have prefs. for the smaller dia. wire too.

Got a couple, unused BIG spinnerbaits with 3 larger-style hooks on them. I think they may be CJ's, not certain tho. I don't use them even though I've sharpened the points really well... Maybe someday.
