Hi guys,
I'm replacing my trailler bunk this year as my 2 x 6 wooded bunk are rotten, they lasted 7 year and i'm out pretty much every weekend. What would be your suggestion for this replacement. Should I stay with some 2 x 6 wooded bunk and if so what would be the best product to cover these wooded bunk.....carpet, vynile....etc.

thanks for the input guys.

I would cover them in carpet. I staple the carpet to the bunks and bring my cordless drill to the ramp. Launch the boat, remove old bunks, replace with new bunks and hardware.

I agree with the above I would maybe add a little glue as well like a loctite and install and go fishing.

You can get Stainless Steel staples. Use them. Also, Marine stores sell the bunk carpet and glue.

When the bunks are replaced, and you are waiting for the carpet glue to dry, go catch a musky!

Just did this last year myself. Before you even get to the carpet, you need to seal those 2x6s. The best stuff is called spar varnish. Its some thick stuff, coat it on as thin as you can and as many times as you have the patience for. I think i did 8 coats on mine. Then the carpet (with outdoor glue) and stainless staples after youre done. Theyll last a good while if you do it properly. Also, leave the middle of the underside exposed (not carpeted) to allow for drainage. Good luck.

would treated lumber last longer without the coating or is it environmentally hazardous?

Glue just helps hold not a need doesn't help the life of the carpet.

It's my understanding that treated lumber will react with aluminum and oxidize it. I believe the stuff they use is corrosive, and I'm not sure if it might be hard on fasteners and trailer paint/metal or not. I put red cedar bunks under my aluminum boat 7 years ago and they are still holding up well.

Red cedar lasts a good long time, and has no safety issues, so if going wood that is what I would use.
