My boat has 520 and 522 on it. Two weeks ago they were fine. Saturday, hit the water and had issues with both units. The front unit would only stay on for a minute and shut off. I later.swapped it with the dash unit, did a soft reset and it takes longer than normal to boot and once you get to the sonar it tracks depth and locks up, screen buttons everything.

Dash unit worked for about an hour, then white screen of death. Soft reset got the unit back up for a very short period then back to the white screen. Soft reset again but nothing changed.

Just wondering if anyone has seen issues lime this and if they are fixable.

Hows your voltage strange for both to go south at the same time.

Did you check the best before date

I'd say voltage too, and check to make sure your motor's charging leads are properly connected to the cranking battery (assuming you're running the electronics from there).

Yeah, I'm wondering if you have dedicated leads to the starting battery or if you are using the boat manufactures wiring from the panel? I have seen problems with a lot of factory set-ups.

I will have to double check but each finder gets power from a different source. Had the boat since 09 and not changed anything, batteries are all two years old. Still have alot more troubleshooting to do. Hope they are not done. Thanks for everyone's input.

Get rid of the batteries run 'em off solar panels on the top of your trolling pontoon.

are you using the ethernet connections? if so, disconnect and see if they work. sounds like you have power but possible network issue.? or it could be the lack of a "fifty" in your resume thats bringing them down.

Lol! No they are not networked and get power from starting and trolling motor batteries. Output is 12.5 and 12.6 volts. I did hard resets on both, back finder fine, front one shut off after 5 minutes. I swapped them both, no reset. Both are on and running for over 30min now. Will leave on all night to see what happens. Very odd.

Voltage drop, maybe, that was temporary?

Must be stray magnetic monopoles, or perhaps fluctuations in the quantum foam, or maybe even zero-point energy instabilities...

Or, just possibly, flaky ICs in those units. Yeah, maybe that's it. Boring, though.

I don't suppose it's correlated with when you start your big motor or are using the trolling motor at high speed...

My problems are.not related to the trolling motor or the outboard. Each finder has the problem at the other location with no motors running.

Unfortunately the 520 and 522 units were the ones that REALLY gave Lowrance a bad reputation. Lots and lots of problems with those models.
Ive had great luck with the HDS units (now 3 on the boat), but there was a list of issues as long as my inseam with the 520 series models.

I had this series a number of years ago and had issues as well.

Main issues that seemed to get everyone were:
1) Improper voltages causing units to lock up periodically especially if starting battery is too small and gets dragged down by accessories running.
2) Improper firmware installed....and not keeping up with updates.

I had a unit that would literally work every OTHER day. Really....it would work Monday but not Tuesday...then again it would work Wednesday and not Thursday. It was nuts.

Best of luck but it sounds like you may be needing a new unit or two.

Thanks for everyone's input. I bought two head units off eBay after lowrance said they no longer repair these units.

I found an aftermarket repair place on eBay will contact them and see what they can do.

Had to buy a 1G card for software updates. I tried it on my defective units. Both units stayed on all night, the dash unit was warm but kept the display. Front unit stayed on. Oh well at least I have spares.

Yep/....Software updates are VERY important. I never thought so, but what do I know ???!!! Once I started getting fanatical about the upgrades, things started working. Imagine that !!

Interesting update. The "new" 520c overheated and the screen turned white. Took about 4 hours. Unit was hot. Took the 522c and put it on the dash. Did not hook up the puck. Never overheated and worked fine. Could the antenna cause an issue like this? The 522c is my original with the updates.
