Can anyone give me a rationale for why the MN season opens June 7, and the Cheeseheads are allowed to flail away several weeks earlier?
PS: Sorry for the dumbo question. I always thought that northern MN and northern WI were equally as far north. I just checked a national map and that isn't the case.

From what I understand, MN opens later to make sure the fish are done spawning to leave them alone while they are doing their thing.

Michigans opener was last saturday for the inland lakes (I blanked on sat).
But the opener for Lake St Clair, which I am losing sleep waiting for, isn't until June 7th. Seems like an eternity away

Musky opens for Michigan's Upper Penninsula on May 15. Same date for the WI-MI boundary waters.

Ok I am clueless, can't we fish for muskies in Wisconsin on May 3?
I will be out on the beautiful Chain O Lkes in Waupaca WI. I suspect that's in the "south" Wisconsin territory, and of course I releaae 'em all.

I suppose I ought to also ask when I can start casting for muskies in the Minneapolis metro area, too, just to be completely clueless!

Thanks & Good luck everyone!

I would guess the spawning issue as well... speaking of which, I can't imagine that the local muskies (Madison, WI) are doing there thing yet - not that it matters, there is no natural reproduction here.  The top temps I got today while on my "shakedown run" was 53 degrees.  Most of the lake was 50 or 51.

The easiest way to explain this would be to put forth the theory that Minnesota wants their fishery to get better and better by protecting the spawning females. Wisconsin does not seem to care, hence we can go get "em while still in the process of having little ones. Also no larger size limits as of yet either to amount to anything. Seems a little strange to me. After all, the Muskie is our state fish. I would think we would want to protect them just a little better. At least until we are sure they are done spawning.

You can fish metro fish the first weekend of June.
