Posts: 18 Location: Trempealeau, WI | If you only had one bait to choose for early spring in a river system what type would it be? Thanks, Troy

Posts: 2361 | Rivers tend to be situational, and also tend to vary widely as to flow, depth, cover so it would be hard to choose just one bait for them. However in the spring I think small would be well accepted and since I lately have been on a small suick, and rubber hairy glider kick for casting. I would feel very comfortable with either of these baits in a wide variety of conditions. I will narrow it down further. Rubber hairy glider, it does a lot, the tails probably talk to the fish, and I doubt they have seen anything like it before. Oh, and if you need a backup bait for a spotted fish try throwing a triple d, jerk it down to depth, and let it drift past the cover suspended, just as it gets nearly past rip it away. Muskies are really fast, they will get it.

Posts: 32922 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Mikie, The problem with your presentation is the BU-PR. If you blow up a muskie, the photo is nastier as the fish, albeit just shocked to it's demise, looks bad. The release just won't work at all. Good bait, though. Another alternative is a 5 gallon glass jar. Couple pounds of dry ice in the bottom, and fill the rest with sand. Drill a few holes in the cap, screw it on, drop it in your favorite hole, and get out of Dodge.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I fish river nearly 80% of the time I am on the water. Many of the same baits wrok that work on lakes. Think current at all times and find cranks that track true in it(trophy divers, depth raiders, Jakes, and cranes have been favs). All types of jerk baits work, and I stick to many of the old timers(Bobbies, Sucks, Reef Hawgs), though Jerkos and Phantoms really have my attention lately. Spinners work well as temps climb, and any one of your favorite bucktails(remember shallow runnin' stuff for many river situations) will work. Good luck, and remember, current is key! J

Location: Athens, Ohio | Jeez, Steve, I only wanted to plant a small charge just to stun the critters, not a shock-and-awe bombardment that turns them into Treet! I see your point though, maybe I'll stick with the commercial baits for a while longer. If raising two boys hasn't taught me patience, muskie fishing will. Best wishes for great big fishes, m
