Posts: 33 Location: Madison, WI | I'm looking at a Premier Casting Rod PC70MM for fishing 1/4 - 3/4 ounce Rapalas. Mostly Rattlin' Raps and Shad Raps and Original Floating. Now I need to figure what reel to use with that rod. I like ABU. Any suggestions? Also, anyone use this rod for the Rapalas I'm looking to use? Any information, recommendations is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | I'd recommend a medium heavy for those, especially considering the rattlin raps. you didn't specify the species, and i am assuming you dont mean muskies (you wont like it or want it for musky rod) but for bass and smaller northern pike a 7' mh would be pretty good, 7 foot heavy if more for pike. but the premier 7' is a great rod you'll like it. for reels dont count out curado or chonarch by shimano. will be easy and cheaply found on ebay and as good if not better than an abu.

Posts: 33 Location: Madison, WI | I am looking at early season pike. So would I be looking for a 7' heavy with medium action? Using smaller baits is totally new to me and I assumed that heavy power was only for heavy lures. Is there a rod you would suggest specifically?

Posts: 98 Location: Franklin, WI | I use a Revo STX reel (spooled with 65# braid) for lighter lures and have had great success with it. It handled pike over 50" up in Alaska, has a strong drag (24 lb.) and good speed (6.4, 7.1, or 8.0) for burning smaller bucktails.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I like the Lexa 100 w/ 65# braid. Not that you asked about rods but my favorite early season muskie/pike rods are a Premier Flippin stick and a Legend Tournament Flippin stick. I haven't used the Mojo flippin stick but it looks like it would also be perfect. I'm using these with baits like Husky Jerks, 6" Grandma, 1oz spinnerbaits, 1/2 to 1oz jigs, kilr eels, etc.

Posts: 33 Location: Madison, WI | I really appreciate all of the suggestions. I know a lot more now than I did last night. Thanks for the info on the rods especially. I would have ended up with something that wouldn't have been what I really wanted. Medium Heavy / Moderate Action / 7'0 or 7'6. Low profile baitcasting reel with high-speed retrieve with braided line. Anything I'm missing? You've all been a wealth of information. Thanks!

Posts: 1039 Location: North St. Paul, MN | I have that mojo bass flippin stick. Sweet! Use it for frog fishing bass, trolling cranks for eyes and pike, spinner baits for bass, pike, and muskies, 6" slammers, 4" phantoms, the occasional daredevle, bass jigs and worms, Zara spooks, etc. have a Curado 201 with it. Very versatile and the right price. I also like the mojo bass sloppin frog for the same applications. Buddy of mine has that and so does the father in law and they use it about the same.
