| Can a Novice remove and change the gears in a new Diawa Lexa 300 HS reel. High speed 7/1 is too fast for me looking for 6/1 gears...
Has anyone changed these? was it difficult to do? any help thanks Mike |

Location: Canada | The three main variables are spool diameter, gear diameter and handle length (handle turn diameter) -- you don't need 6:1 gears to drop from 32 IPT to 28 IPT, you can reduce the spool diameter by underfilling and get 28 IPT, will feel just like you've switched in the lower gearset. |

| So your saying a Tranx PG with a full spool, will feel the same as a Tranx HS with a half spool bringing in the same Double 13 Bucktail on a fast retreive......? Is that right |

Regarding the topic, it all depends on how technically skilled you are, i find i quite easy, but for several of my friends the thought of taking a reel apart basically scares them to death (almost) :P |

| It's ridiculously simple. If you're worried about taking your reels apart, take pictures with your phone as you go so you have a visual of what goes where. I like to lay the parts out in a line in the order they came off, in the direction they were facing. Clean them in that order, and then reassemble them last off - first on. If you take your time and pay close attention to washers that may be stuck to gears, or underneath them, putting the reel back together is a breeze. If you get stuck, refer to the schematic. My first few attempts were a bit scary, but between ABU, Shimano, Diawa, etc. they all are similar enough where after the first few reels it's a piece of cake.
The only thing that got me at first was trying to put the spool back in and the side plate back on with the spool weights extended. You need to push those in. Not to where they snap to the locked-in position, just slide them in on the peg and insert the spool up into the frame from the bottom, and THEN flip it over to re-attach the side plate.

| I guess I didn't really answer your question, lol.
You need the main drive hear and the pinion gear (the little gear that turns the main drive gear) You might want to change the clip that holds the pinion gear depending on how old it is. If it's your first one, it should take about 15 minutes. Half an hour if you clean and lube everything, which I would do.

Location: Canada | I'm sorry, I didnt actually answer your question. I agree with esoxaddict: it's not that complicated or hard, but you have to be willing to face a small-scale mechanical puzzle. There's a precise guide to the puzzle though (the schematic) and everything is logical and perfectly workable. You need to have some really small screwdrivers ad pliers, clean bright workspace. Like he said, take pictures as you go the first time. There are lots of youtube tutorials, perhaps not on your specific reeel, but similar. But yeah, if you reduce the amount of line in the Tranx HG until a turn of the handle brings in the same IPT as the Tranx PG, it will feel exactly the same to retrieve as the Tranx PG. I've got a buddy uses the HG de-spooled to about 38 IPT. He's effectively running it at a "custom gearing" between the PG and HG. |
