Me either. The guy seemed like the kind of meathead who would go and fish anyway. Hopefully he does and gets a lifetime ban. I am glad to see they were able to prosecute him. |

| Hope this gets published in the area around Lake Winnebago. Some of the walleye fisherman there take pride in how quickly they can gill a muskie caught while fishing for walleyes. They are convinced that muskies exclusively eat walleye despite all the shad in the lake. |

Had he not admitted it I would think the judge would have come down harder on him. Since this was a Canadian judge I would hope they would impose harder punishment than the American courts. |

In this case, the hardship of not being able to catch and eat fish for two years is probably a lot worse than the $1,000.
I'm not sure how this punishment aligns with other similar offences, but sometimes you have to take what you can get and hope they learn. It's probably a lot like what goes on down here. The police catch someone, arrest them, take them down to the station, and Monday morning they're right out there on the street doing the same thing you just arrested them for last week.
From my limited interactions, the OPP/MNR don't mess around. If they catch him out there again, I don't think there will be much leniency.
If I was this guy, with all the publicity surrounding this? I'd be reluctant to fish those waters ever again.

| Glad he got caught, glad he got convicted and glad he got the fine and ban. Kudos to everyone involved in his getting caught and prosecuted. I agree too light of a sentence. Here in Pa. there are a lot of repeat fish and game law repeat offenders, most people even wealthy don't like loosing money and a ban is also a good penalty too, just need to make the penalty so that the offender will THINK twice before repeating the crime. I realize there are knuckleheads who no matter the penalty will repeat the offense. |

Location: Minnesota. | Ya know I was willing to hang him out to dry but after seeing the vid. it "appears" he's pretty sorry for his stupid deed. It seems sincere.
Given that, I'll share this. I'm British (was) emmigrated over 50 yrs. ago, - people over here in the U.S. really don't fully know just how wonderful we have it in our sporting world! It's an amazing country we have and as such I firmly feel it needs protecting more than most realize.
I believe we need stiffer fines as much to set the example as to punish. We have have it far too good to have our resources taken advantage of.
I can't tell you how much it galls me to see of the abuses from newby's to this country. They, more than any American, should be setting the example!
I'll go now. Enjoy what we have, we have it really, really good!

| I've watched many a lake and pond down here, even some that are designated catch and release only, fall victim to the bucket brigades. These are folks with no fishing license, likely no drivers license, non-English speaking folks who show up with 5 people, a pile of live bait, and fill their buckets with everything they catch. Often times they have a spotter in another vehicle down the road who alerts them to the presence of any law enforcement, so even when you call the tip line, they are packed up and gone before the wardens arrive. They have no regard for the laws, no regard for the fisheries, no regard for the environment, and no regard for the 5 year old kid who won't catch his first fish today with his daddy.
I tell everyone to put the DNR tip line in their cell phone. This case is a perfect example of what happens when conscientious anglers actually make an effort to put a stop to this kind of behavior. Hats off to these guys. |
