Hi Chuck,

Thanks for taking the time to answer all these question. I fish a stained (viewing depth of 3') lake with a maximum depth of 17'. Cabbage weeds only in less than 5' of water. In fishing open water what bait/color would you go to first.

Thanks

Buddy,

If I can add my two cent''s and then Chuck can correct me. Noise Noise Noise help them find the bait.. I recently had a stained water situation and NOTHING moved a fish.. What finally worked is I changed to a Rad Dog spinner bait and added a 4" grub to it for more vibration. I now had a huge bait that probably sounded like a tornado in the water. This finally helped me score. I also have had luck trolling open water with a Jointed Wiley Bait with rattles (short line) Hope this helps!

try the bill lewis supertrap and jerk it forward when trolling. one hell of a noise-maker! We tried it vertically and we could still hear it very well at 1m deep. We couldn't find a deeper spot.

Lots of choices here. Start with big spinnerbaits (and I mean BIG) with red or orange flourescent blades, and black, chartreuse or perch coloured tails. The orange tiger, firebelly, firetiger or glitter perch 10" Jake would be my second choice. 6" jointed Muskie Stalker or 10" jointed Believer on the shallow eye in jailbird, firetiger, or coachdog would work well. A 9" weighted Sledge in chartreuse, orange, or firetiger would also produce. A real "sleeper" would be the Eppinger 300 spoon in hot mackeral.

All of these baits have bright colours - most featuring red or orange (at the high end of the spectrum for maximum visibility). All have big noise and vibration due to rattles or blade(s). All run relatively shallow too.

My home lake generally has 1 foot of visibility (or less), similar depths, and similar weed depths. Every one of the choices mentioned has put MANY fish in the boat, so I know they work.

Yep, loud in terms of audio and visual.

Also, I find that straight retrieves are a little more productive compared to the twitch-pull-reel type presentations that are effective on clear water systems.

My favorites are the 10" Jakes in Firetiger/Chartreuse Patterns or Blue/Silver.

I have raised a decent amount of fish in limited outings using the Super Traps but I have yet to hook up. They are noisy though. Size wize, I think the lack of big profile in the Super Traps are a strike against in open water but I will continue to try them out because I think they make up for it in noise. I'm curious who else has experiences to share about Super Traps, presentations and open water.
