Location: Vilas County, WI | I have an Abu C4 6601 sitting around doing nothing so I was going to buy a cheap rod for it. Kinda use it as an emergency/back-up combo for the summer and a sucker rig in the fall. Since this set-up will see little use, I was going to buy a cheap rod for it. I found I can get a Gander Mtn musky rod for 100 bucks, or a Shimano Sonjour for even less. I don't want to spend more then 100 bucks. Am I sacrificing noticeable performance on a cheaper musky rod? I'm assuming the cheap-o rod will suffice for what I need it for.
My main combos are
7'6" Premier Heavy with an Abu C4 6601
8'0" Premier MH with a Abu NaCL 61
8'6" Premier Heavy with a Revo Toro Winch
Do I even need a 4th set-up??? I thought my current arsenal covers it, but a back-up combo would be nice. |

Location: Chisholm, MN | Yeah, it's nice to have an extra sucker rod. The only thing I would caution is having a quality rod for that application. I've seen rods break from setting the hook on a sucker rod and breaking the line. Cheap rods are fine for certain things like small baits, but not always for sucker fishing. |

| spend a few more dollars and get a 9' TI rod, it would probably replace the rod with the toro winch on it. Use the premier H as your spare and sucker rod. |

Location: Wisconsin | With rods I think you get what you pay for. I wouldn't waste 90 bucks on a cheap Rod, you may as well sell the reel and save yourself the money |

| Not knowing how cold of temps you fish with suckers.....In past I've seen advice on getting a cheap fiberglass catfish rod......theory was that in cold temps the good graphite's can snap....and a cheap catfish rod can still probably land a 40 pound fish......why spend $100 when you can spend $40......that being said.....I don't practice what I preach and have way too many rods and reels.....if you're new to this......you'll have way to much stuff soon enough.....good luck |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | If you need a 4th setup depends on if you want to throw heavier baits. If you're looking to throw mags and pounders, then yes you do, otherwise I don't really see a need for another one. As for cheap rods, they aren't as nice as more expensive rods, but they still get the job done. I use a $60 7'6" Cabelas rod for all of my jerkbait applications, including Squirko XL's. |

| There is a big difference between cheap and inexpensive. I've seen some nice used inexpensive rods sell on eBay for less than $100. |

| I have had a couple of the Gander Mtn. Guide Series muskie rods for 5-6 years now and have never had any problems with them and I like them both, and use them every time I'm out. Got them for less than $100, on sale too. I can't tell you what the ones they're selling now are like, though.
