I have not seen a whole lot of discussion on Side Imaging on here. The research I have seen a lot of talk on Striped Bass, Bass down south and some walleye but very limited on Muskie fisherman using them while fishing. Is there a reason for this cause it seems usefull for any fishing for identifying structure and that is what all the muskie guys talk about is structure and spot on the spot. Maybe I missed it but what are your thoughts on using it specifically for Muskie fishing????? Thank You!!!

I just purchased an HDS10 unit with all the bells and whistles last fall...I got to use it a bit down in Tenn just after Christmas, but plan on putting it to the test. The unit also came with a Point-1 antenna puck which I was not so sure about, but that thing is on the MONEY...impressed with its responsiveness and better accuracy than the internal antennas. The Side Imaging seems like it will be good to locate pods of baitfish/fish out 100' beyond the sides of the regular transducer for trollers and spotting structure and fish for casters. I can't wait to put it all to the test this spring to see if its what its all cracked up to be. So the SI is new to me and I'm anxious to see what others have to say...

I would recommend finding Doctor Sonar on Facebook and his website, lots of great info to learn from like this with an explanation

I have a bird 899 and love the fact that i can read more bottom structure without having to zig-zag all over the water. Noticing something on the SI and investigating further has increased fish activity for my boat, also use it to locate sunken structure for the big flatheads that roam around my neck of the woods.

SI rocks. I have 'Bird and love the SI function. See the weed edges exactly and mark what you wish to on the gps with a drag and drop, see the rocks and reefs and where there are spots on the spots, and see muskies, too!

How far off to the side do the SI units see? I imagine it depends on depth and maybe other variables. Haw far from a 15' weedline do you need to be in to see it well?

How far away can you spot schools of bait 5-20 feet down over 40-80 feet of water? Does Humminbird seem to be the leader over Lowrance on this, or is Lowrance on equal footing with Bird?

Finally, are the 7" screen units "worth it" or does one need to go bigger to allow the SI to be as effective/clear/max distance as possible?

If i remember correctly my bird unit reads up to 150' per side, 300' total. It is also fully adjustable as to how far you want it to read. The less feet you have to a side will result in more definition. I usually run mine around 80-100' unless i am on a specific piece of structure then i'll dial it down to give me the most detail. Multiple options to allow DI, mapping, 2D, etc allows you to really get some specifics combined on one screen. I am by no means an electronics genius, however, I have found my bird to be pretty user friendly and should get better with it the more i use it. I have the 899 which is the 7" screen and i think that size is more than adequate. Would a 8,9,10,12" inch screen be better? Sure, but mine is fine for me. Humminbird vs Lowrance? Thats a chevy vs ford comparison. I went to my local sport shop and played with them both. With a little practice, you should be able to see a 15' weed-line a hundred feet out no problem.

Both units are good I went with birds so I could hook everything together. I have 2 1198 s one up front one at the council. My last boat I had 5 inch screen I wish I bought bigger. This boat I bought the biggest they had. Buy the biggest you can afford. You don't here guys saying wish I bought small .the big he screen helps you see details easer.

Wow, I should learn how to use mine.
Got a new Ranger in '12 and the dealer said he he didn't know I'd ordered the SI detail when we walked around the boat and saw the long 'ducer out back. I said I hadn't and that boat was likely someone else's. He said I did, I said to check the invoice and sure 'nuff, he says you got a free one then.

$1800 worth! I guess...*eyes roll* I'm very new to this stuff after using my older Vexilar FL-18 for years.

I've never even turned this device on yet - spent too much time trying to learn the HDS system and trying to fish more than read a manual. Last year that paid off in spades as I learned the new unit.

I'm a dinosaur (Red button/Green button kind'a boy) but after getting acquainted with the HDS good and proper last year I might need to change that!

It's SO weird seeing that You Tube demo...I just want to fish! Another toy to work on during the hot mid-day...

There is certainly a learning curve with these units. The more time you put into learning what the unit is capable of doing the more rewards you receive in the end. Tons of help out there also, here, you-tube, bbc.com, etc, etc.
