Posts: 46 | DonPursch - 3/6/2015 10:00 AM Always look far enough behind your bait Don't watch the bait and then always set you self up for the turn way before you even get the bait close to the boat and just go into your turn and if there is a fish you are ready to do the BIG circle. A big circle is much better than an 8 a real big fish can not make the turn with you if you don't give her enough room just keep it out in front of her and be aggressive that's what makes them bite your aggressivness try it you'll see it all happen before your eyes all the best I had he fish of a lifetime 15 feet out. Went into the eight and the fish was so frickin huge it could not make the turn. I got so far out in front on the eight I was screwed. Mr Pursch's advice was not in my brain at the time. Bottom line, 20 years and one fish on the eight. Many tries but no takers. What hurts is that the TV shows hook them all the time. Maybe thats why I don't have my own show.

I thought it was just me... almost all the follows I see are 5 - 10 ft behind the bait. Very rarely do I see them coming the whole time with nose to the bait.

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | Some good feedback from good fisherman. Lots of varying opinions. Some questions I have are: 1. You will always be at risk of a "late arrival", whether you figure8 once or 10 times at the end of each cast. How do you decide when is the right time to fire off another cast? Its all about ROI in my opinion. Thus, this question needs to be answered for every cast. 2. If you are getting late arrivals, perhaps there is a reason for that? Maybe put more thought/planning into your cast placement or retrieve to help prevent that? Ask yourself WHY that fish showed late and maybe you can turn those "lazy" fish into biters. Was your presentation too high in the water column? Was your cast placement too far away from the "honey"? Etc Etc.

Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Great video footage of Josh Brovosky doing the figure. Watch how he makes use of the rod, going deep, coming up shallow, close to the boat and then reaching out. I try to do the same except when fishing slop (stay near surface), in shallow water, or when I've got a fish on the line. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QA5Ncy5nVyg Edited by Yooper Padre 3/9/2015 8:35 AM

Posts: 1283 | I try to 8 every cast but sometimes just L it if the water is really clear and I dont see anything. Ive had a few chase in the 8 but always screw it up somehow. I have got bit before just straight reeling and just leaving the bait dangling at the side of the boat and a fish comes out of nowhere. Scared the crap out of me and since then always watch the water and at a min do a L. A good pair of glasses really helps to see them also.

Posts: 74 Location: Minnesota | Don't overthink it. If you can see twenty feet in all directions in gin clear water the odds are using your time on the next cast optimizes your opportunity for success. If visibility is limited or you "have a feeling" in clear water then stick with you gut and perform the 8. There are no rules...go with your intuition.
