Posts: 3 | I noticed several of you were discussing Cave Run in March and I thought I would give you guys an update on the lake conditions. Also, there is an excellent website operated by the Corps of Engineers which displays the current depth of the lake and the outflow at the spillway. This is an extremely helpful tool because not only does it report the current lake level and spillway flow at 6:00am each morning but it also shows how the level has changed over the past 24 hours. Here is the site: http://lrl-apps.lrl.usace.army.mil/wc/reports/lkreport.html As you can see, the lake is 10.9 feet above summer pool (730 feet above sea level) and the rain is pounding down now with a possible accumulation of 4 inches of rain by Thursday. The normal flow at the spillway is around 500 cfps but today they are only releasing 113 cfps. That is just a trickle. As you can see the lake has gone up .8 feet in the past 24 hours and will definitely rise much more over the next few days. This site will tell you if the lake is dropping or rising and we know that is important to know when fishing a resevoir. I scouted the lake on Saturday and there is lots of ice but it is disappearing quickly. The forcast for next 7 days is warm and wet with temps around 58-60. Next weekend could be dry and warm per current forcasts. The water is full of clay from the icing along the banks and visability is poor to none. Rattlebaits are great in murky water. Thanks to you guys up north for coming down to fish! Best of luck. | ||

Posts: 2097 | http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Flooding-closes-recreation-areas... The news report said certain ramps are closed, they showed clay lick under water. I assume Alfrey is open as well as scott creek. Alfrey is the highest elevated ramp there. Here is a news release: Forest Service recreation areas close due to flooding Release Date: Mar 9, 2015 For Immediate Release Contact: Tim Eling 606-784-6428 WINCHESTER, Ky., March 9, 2015 – The rising water of Cave Run Lake is flooding recreation areas in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Some boat ramps are currently unusable, and some camping areas are under water. These sites are currently closed. “Along with the snow melt, rain is in the forecast for the next several days,” said Acting District Ranger Tim Eling. “As a result, additional recreation areas and some roads could potentially close later this week, depending on the amount of rainfall received. “The ground is so saturated right now that the soil cannot absorb any more water. “Mudslides are another concern. Trees could easily uproot and fall, and large boulders could also break away and slide downhill, especially along steep slopes.” Drivers should use caution and watch for rushing flood waters and debris on roadways. Flood waters can be powerful enough to roll vehicles, destroy bridges and tear out roads. Forest Service roads in the Red River Gorge are closed at this time due to ground saturation. These roads were closed last week to prevent further damage to the road surface and promote public safety. Campers are encouraged to avoid low-lying areas. Creeks and rivers can rise quickly, and water depth can be difficult to determine after daylight hours. “To determine if Forest Service roads or recreation areas are closed due to flooding, visitors are urged to call the office of the district where they wish to visit,” added Eling. Daniel Boone National Forest visitors may call the following offices for more information.
