Posts: 91 | I always love fishing new waters, as we probably all do, but I have a question for you guys. Besides the obvious structures you can see, i.e., points, weedbeds, drop offs, what features do you look for FIRST, when hitting new water? Recently, a great episode from KO, touched on it, with using your electronics, to find cabbage, etc. So, What's the first thing you do , when hitting a lake for the first time? Thanks

Posts: 69 | I like to motor around and see what fish I can mark. What depths they are holding at, relating to structure or suspending, big schools, small pods, etc.

Posts: 79 | I always start at the public access. I am shocked at how few people actually fish by public accesses. Probably the least pressure area on a lake is by the public access. After I get done pounding that area first them I'm on to other things that I am sure many people will post.

Posts: 410 Location: one foot over the line | Psycho-analyze every square inch of a good topo map, visit google earth and mark up said maps with anything that might look interesting. Read and research any and all available literature on said body of water. Launch, scout areas with map and electronics, mark way-points, notes on maps, start at best lookin spot and start casting, set hook on 55 incher, net fish, remove hooks, take picture with happy fisherman and said fish, release fish, drink beer, repeat.

Posts: 397 Location: Wisconsin | Last summer my season goal was to learn a group of lakes near by me that I had never fished before. One key I found was to make multiple passes on any structure that looks good, and take your time. Start 200 yards off the structure make one pass, then move the boat a full cast closer to the structure and keep repeating till you're on the structure. If you move a fish, apply that same strategy to similar spots on the lake.... This paid off for me last year, ended up putting 8 musky in the boat over a couple day trips on a new lake I never fished before. The key was just to take your time, and be patient on each individual spot. Learn the edges, inside or outside turns, small structure changes..... Talking about this is making me anxious for the season! Edited by WiscoMusky 2/18/2015 1:56 PM
