Does anyone use the Boggs tackle maker a lot for their bucktail making? I emailed them asking if they had a unit that could handle 10-12 inch musky sized bucktails and thy said they didn't have anything that size, so what are people using? Or am I misunderstanding how people use this machine if at all? My dad wants to make his own bucktails as a hobby but he has a bad shoulder which affects how much he can do with his arm and how much pressure he can assert.

I have the one that goes up to .051 wire which is the biggest size they have. So it depends on the thickness of the wire you plan to use. I personally use round nose pliers when using thicker wire. The old vise on the bench to pinch the loop. I grab a pair of vise grips to grip the end of the tag and wrap the wire 3 times and cut of the excess. Dubro has on that goes from 2 gauge to 22 gauge. I know some tackle makers that use it to make rigs when fishing for sharks! Hope this helps.

I should have clarified, From my understanding it's not the thickness of the wire but the length of the wire that poses the problem. I believe the standard tackle maker allows for a 4" wire and you can get an adapter to hold a 6" wire, but there isn't one for 10-12 inch wire.

Gotcha! That makes more sense. When I make my 8" Gamecock spinners I do wrap the front end with the device, then add the components and use the process I explained previously to wrapped the hook end. Those wires are 14" long and will fit with out the components on there. The front end is always the neat end in most cases when your selling baits. I suggest you get an open one like the dubros or Hagen's wire bender. Those are the types were the components won't get in the way. Sorry about the mix up.

They are pricey but well worth it in the long run. You can always sell a few and help get some money back from your investment.

With the Boggs you will be limited on the length of the bucktail unless you cut it in half & buy the longer conversion part (don't know the name of it). I had seen a site that showed it cut in half & bolted to a board but can't find it.

Another option would to pay more & get the Hagens Professional Wire Former & buy the conversion kit for the thicker musky wire. You won't be limited on the length of bucktail. I have the Hagen's bender & I love it. I have carpal tunnel & arthritis in my hands as well as bad shoulders & using pliers to bend the wire was a pain. I bought mine 5 or 6 years ago & paida good $40 less for it but it's still worth it IMO. I also make smaller in-line like the #3 & #5 Mepps that I use for bass & pike.
