Location: Illinois-Indiana | What's your favorite jerk bait set up? (Rod and Reel) I like the 6'9" St. Croix Avid with a Calcutta 400 spooled with 80# Cortland Spectron.

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I use a 8ft Lamiglass with a Calcutta 400 spooled with 65# Power Pro. My rod is longer but from the front of my Ranger it works for me. I have a 7ft St. Croix with a Calcutta 400 spooled with 65# Power Pro that I also use when needed.

Posts: 202 Location: Angola, IN | I got two favorites. 1.) 6'3" G-Loomis X-HVY with an Abu Garcia 6500CS Rocket 2.) 8' Lamiglas X-HVY with Calcutta 400 TE Conquest Both are spooled with 100# Power Pro. If I'm fishing out of a bigger boat, I like the 8'. But if I'm right on the water or I'm fishing in a boat with really high sides, the 6'3" is awesome. Steve Hulbert

Posts: 7049 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | 8' Aurora with a 6500C4, using 80lb spectron. Will chuck an 8" shaker about 10 miles and still have sensitivity. Power to hit a fish hard, and a nice long handle so no bending like a chump to figure 8. Just moved it over from being an all-purpose rod, went from a Morrum to the 6500C4, but was chucking from baby dawgs to 10" Jakes with it last year. Slamr

6'6" Lamiglas figure 8 special with a Morrum 6600 spooled with 80# power pro. I am 6'1" and have tried jerkbait rods up to 7'6" and keep going back to my old Lami. Really nice control.

Posts: 50 Location: Far Northwest Chicago Suburb | I have two set ups for my jerk bait/glide bait fishing. For true jerk baits or pull baits I use a six-foot St. Croix Premier paired with a Penn International 900 series reel, spooled with eighty-pound Cortland Spectron. The baits I use with this setup are almost 100% Suicks, and Bobbie baits but also Burt’s, and my homemade secret pull bait. For glide baits I use a more moderate action rod, which is the seven foot six inch St. Croix Classic Cat rod, paired with an Abu Garcia 6500 2-speed reel. The reel is spooled with 80-pound Cortland Spectron also. The glide baits that are great for this rod include: Magic Makers, Deadheads, Punishers, Reef Hawgs, Undertakers, Power Probes, Cobbs, and Eddie Baits.

Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | I like my 7' Gapen's Far North Muskie Rod. They aren't too common but very nice. It costs the same as a st croix premier but has a lifetime warrenty. I Have a 6500C3 on this reel but will my put my 6500C4 on it if I get it repaired. I like 80 lb tuff xp and use a .045 single strand leader. This rod is really going to take the abuse because I can't seem to put it down. I find myself working lots of other baits with it just because its so light and sensitive.

I use a 6'10" AllStar with a 6500 c3. This winter, I made a 7'6" on an AllStar blank that I put a 6500 on. I don't think I would use a c4 with a jerk bait rod. I wonder if the gears would hold up... I have a c4 and tried it for burning bucktails, but it was too hard to crank, put it on the rod that I use for tubes and jigs. Tom B

Location: Illinois-Indiana | I notice a lot of guys are using longer rods for jerk baits, is it because you sit up high in your boat or do you prefer the longer rod. I would think the longer rod would be slapping the water all day.
